Chances for RD acceptance?

SAT - 2270 (700 R, 800 M, 770 W)
Sub SAT - 800 Math2, 800Physics, 780Chem
APs - 6 done so far (4 5s and 2 4s) - 3 more in senior year
Tough, rigorous curriculum in Science and Engg and in top 7-8% in School (525 kids)
ECs - Usual Honor Society stuff, AMIE school winner, Varsity Swim team, Taekwondo Black Belt (done for 7 years), JSA,
Done Math teaching job, Medical Research in Hospital in summer for 6/8 weeks
Recs - Pretty decent (I think)

Do you think with these Stats one stands a chance?

bump! bump!

Class rank is too low. If you were top 5% maybe, but 7-8% seems to be a bit of a stretch. 9 APs sounds a bit weak too. You do have great test scores though. Outside of those numbers though your ECs aren’t eye catching. Pretty slim chance if you ask me, but then again, it’s a slim chance for everyone.

wait 9 aps is weak??
haha what?
i got into stanford with 5 done so far…
though i guess i’m taking 6 this year so…

9 AP is not weak, but don’t see any stand out point. 50% chance for Dartmouth .

Pretty solid, but you can never tell with these Ivies. Apparently, though, Dartmouth is the hardest to get into out of Harvard, Cornell, and Brown?? I posted chance me threads in those schools (since I’m applying to them) and also in Dartmouth’s forum before. The chances for H, C, and B were good but not for Dartmouth. I found this to be quite strange, because Dartmouth doesn’t have the lowest admission rates (or at least, not as low as Harvard’s).

^ I would not judge the selectivity of these schools by the responses you get from chance threads on CC. Nobody on this board can offer reliable chances beyond whether admission is a realistic possibility or not.

As for the OP, your stats will definitely qualify you (they’re better than mine, in fact). Your rank does seem a little low. Does you school send many kids to Dartmouth? Will Dartmouth know your school is as rigorous as you say it is? Your rank is in the top 10%, so I don’t imagine it will be the nail in the coffin, but will not be what gets you in.

So to answer your question directly, one with your stats does stand a chance. If you really like Dartmouth, I would recommend applying because it’s a crapshoot and you really won’t know unless you apply.

Yes, but I still like to be chanced b/c they’re not always so far off. ^I agree that the whole process is just so arbitrary and random. You work your butt off, slaving over essays, registering for tests, asking for recs, etc. all for that one moment when you send in your app and pray. Your app then gets chewed up by admissions and out spits a decision which will affect your entire life: accepted, rejected, or deferred. Or worse-waitlisted.

Someone should invent a machine that will make a profile of an applicant’s brain (and I’m not talking about a CT Scan) so we won’t have to write anything. They can just see our academic, personal, and psychological “fitness” for their school. It would make life a thousand times easier.

thanx for the responses/opinions - agree it is a crapshoot. yes, the curriculum is very rigorous (all APs are mandatory in the program and not optional)… and agreed rank is not high but all are very close (for example some got a 4.6 (w) and was in 4% and 4.44 (w) was 7% difference of 20 + ranks)… i hope dartmouth knows the program

one thing that is being sent to dartmouth is abstracts of medical research done in summer and another one started last month … one for hospital based infections and another for depression in caregivers of dementia patients … don’t know if that will impress them …

It will look nice, but you know how these research things go. It’s basically all been done before by professionals, but I think they’ll still appreciate a high schooler trying.

^^^ OK, so you still like to get chanced. That’s fine. I’m just saying that you can’t say Dartmouth is more selective than any of the school you mentioned based off of the chances you were given on CC. The method used on here to chance people is even more arbitrary than the method used by top colleges.
