Chances for Stanford

Hey everyone,

I am a rising senior in high school, and college admissions is almost here. One of my dream schools is Stanford, and I wanted other peoples’ opinions on how I would look as an applicant to Stanford. I haven’t decided on early action for Stanford yet.

UW GPA: 3.82 (Weighted: I haven’t checked, but it was 5.99 last semester, so it should be well above 6.00 by the end of the school year.)
SAT 1: 2040 ( I don’t plan to report this to Stanford)
ACT: 32 ( Retaking, hopefully should get 34+)
SAT II: Haven’t taken any yet, plan to take at least math II and physics
Class Rank: not sure exactly, I know that I’m in the top 10% of my school class, and in top 0.5% of my district.
AP Scores: AP Human Geo: 5, AP Euro History:4, AP Stats: 3, AP Macro: 4. I have taken 5 AP courses this year, but scores aren’t out yet. I do expect 4’s and 5’s, no 3’s.
IB: I am in the IB Program, taking HL Math, HL Physics, HL English, SL Chem, SL History, and SL Spanish.
Major Awards: A lot of FBLA State awards like for cyber security, Business Law/ Procedure, Parliamentary Procedure, I won 2 Presidential Community Service Awards, I qualified for the national history bee, and I won a best position paper award at an MUN conference.
EC’s: A lot of community service: MOSI, a VA hospital ( I did 2 internships there), I am part of a youth council that’s a part of local government, and I am part of another youth council that’s affiliated with the state government. I take part in many clubs: FBLA ( which I’m president of), MUN, NHS, and History Bee. I am part of more clubs, but these are the main clubs that I do focus on. I have applied to summer programs and have been rejected so far, but I think that I probably might get in on a program at the University of South Florida that will give me an opportunity to coauthor a paper relating to a STEM topic. If I’m REALLY lucky, hopefully Princeton may let me intern at the PPPL.

As for essays, interviews, and recommendations, I am fairly average at writing essays, and I will spend a LOT of time for the essays, so they should turn out well. I’m pretty decent with interviews as I have been interviewed and interviewed other people a lot. As for recommendations, most of my teachers do like me, some REALLY like me, and my GC is pretty cool with me, so those should turn out fine too.

Please, do be honest, I definitely want to know where I could improve myself in time for college apps. Thanks everyone!

I’d say you’re qualified, just like a lot of people. How high does your weighted GPA scale go?..

Thanks for your feedback! There’s not really a cap on the weighted GPA scale if that’s what you’re asking.

You’d probably get more responses over on the chances forum. Also, I don’t quite understand what you mean by there’s not a cap on the weighted GPA scale. I mean, doesn’t there have to be? Otherwise there’d be no way to actually calculate weighted GPA if there wasn’t a max to compare it to.

Thanks for the suggestion! When it comes to weighted GPA, there simply is no maximum or cap. The weighted GPA is basically your unweighted GPA which is out of 4.0 plus extra points for honors/AP/dual enrollment/other classes. I know that its +0.04 points per semester for honors classes and +0.08 points per semester for AP classes given that you pass the exam with at least a score of 3. There are people who have gotten 4.1’s to people getting 10’s and 11’s for weighted GPA’s: there’s not a limit on the weighted GPA.

What @gdlt234 is trying to say is that your weighted system seems weird. And it is. Normally grading scales for weighting assign a 5.0 value for an A in an AP/Gov School/etc course, making a 5.0 the max weighted GPA you can get. (Assuming you took all AP classes and you got straight As).

This is personally why I think there should be a standard grading scale.

As of right now 3.82 UW and a 32 ACT are not extremely competitive for Stanford so retaking the ACT is a good idea. I think you have to send in your SAT as well for Stanford.
What do you plan on doing?
Good reca and essays will help a LOT so ask for them earlier.

Apply SCEA for a higher chance, but Stanford is just so competitive, they had a flat 5% admit rate this year, so it’s basically a lottery for anyone applying. You’re a very qualified candidate, you just picked the most competitive/selective university in the US.

Just so there is no confusion, like rdeng2614 said, you HAVE to send in ALL SAT scores taken, as well as ALL ACT scores. No questions asked. You can choose what SAT II scores to send in if you take any, though. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your help - I got rejected from Stanford early, which sucks, but it was to be expected. Waiting for ivy league admissions day!

Your stats looks good, but try focusing on one interest. Demonstrating a singular interest is pretty much the only factor (besides sports and legacy) that will put you above everyone else. hope this helps! Please chance me back

Thanks therealdoor! I can’t do anything now, but I appreciate the advice. I’ll let everyone on this thread know what happens with college decisions (does anyone else find it annoying when people don’t provide their actual results after asking for their chances at colleges?).
