Chances for Summer Program?

Hey,

Current senior in HS seeing what you guys think about my chances for the summer program:

Weighted GPA: 3.8670
Unweighted GPA: 3.5480
SAT: 1700 - Reading: 600 Math: 580 Writing: 520
Took 2 APs (Composition and US History) last year, got 3's on both.
Taking 2 APs (Calc AB and Comp Sci)
Interested in a Computer Science major (College of Engineering)
White Male, PA HS

Less relevant information but it may mean something:

Father went to PSU, two brothers currently going there.
Took multiple computer related courses (Cisco 1, Visual Basic, and this year, AP Computer Science).
Currently working for a CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier, like Comcast or Verizon) doing technical support.

I'm definitely applying for the summer program, not only because it increases my chances, but I want to get a head-start on freshman year. Would applying for the summer program be a good choice in my situation? Thanks for any advice, I really appreciate it.

Based on previous years, I would think you could get in for Fall at University Park and definitely for summer.

Thanks for the response. Anyone else have an guess? I appreciate this a lot.

Bump!

I believe you could start applying today but got home late from a college visit to PSU. Really enjoy the campus and the people. Will apply tomorrow and hopefully send in everything asap.

Do note that since this past years freshman class was the second largest in school history, it might be harder to get into the school this year if the school wants to control enrollment a little. If you want to do summer with Engineering this should be fine, but direct fall admit for engineering may or may not be.

Yup, I applied today for Computer Science summer session. I also sent out applications to Drexel and UPitt as I received VIP applications for both. PSU is my primary choice though, and hopefully I’ll be able to post in the Class of 2018 Admissions thread! :)

SAT is low for ENG. Boost it if you can.

@luvthej

Yeah, I know the SAT is kinda low but SAT is only 1/3rd of the admissions process and that 1/3rd includes everything else. Checking per CB, I’m above the bottom of the mid-range. GPA is 2/3rds and I don’t think I’m at a bad spot for that. Besides, I sent in the application today for the priority application and I am going for the summer session. I believe with everything combined, I should be in the clear. Agree/Disagree?

I hate to be negative, mostly because no one knows if someone will get in or not, but I stand by my comment that the SAT, especially the math is low for ENG. Your unweighted GPA is fine, but not high enough to off set a weaker SAT score. Another thing not going for you is that you are taking AP calc and compsci now. they will not have grades to off set a lackluster performance on the SAT
If you told me you were majoring in a department other than one in ECoS or ENG, I would have a more positive outlook. ECoS and ENG is somewhere between a reach and an average chance IMO. Not trying to make you feel bad. If you are motivated for ENG, get the SAT math score up. If you are motivated to attend PSU, consider applying under a different proposed major. The latter is not terrible as long as you take and do well in calculus and other quantitative science courses and then you can transfer into ENG.
I do wish you the best and I hope you are accepted.
