UC Berkeley (legacy)
Vassar

Stats

Cumulative G.P.A.
U/W: 3.8

Rank

Classes
I've taken the most rigorous schedule my school offers.
Freshman: Advanced Geometry, Advanced English, Advanced Bio, Spanish III, World Studies, Gym (required).
Sophomore: Advanced English, Honors Chemistry, AP Modern European History (scored a 3 on the exam, long boring story that no one cares about haha. short version-- unqualified teacher, only one person out of 80 that she taught scored a 4, most people failed), Algebra II / Trig, Spanish IV, Gym (required).
Junior: AP US History (4), AP Environmental Science (4), AP English Lang (4), Student Leadership (my school is incredibly student run; this is basically a period to do all that. Very similar to a class officer position-- the officers are in the class. I, however, was not an officer), Foods & Nutrition, Pre-Calculus, and an AP level Spanish class at a local college.
Senior: AP English Lit, AP Bio, AP Stat, Government / Econ (my school doesn't offer APs for these), Student Leadership, and black and white film photography at the local college

Scores
SAT reasoning: 2100 [610 CR (ouch); 750 M; 740 W]
SAT subject: 630 Spanish, 670 US history, 700 Lit (all ouch haha)
ACT: 33 (36 English, 36 Reading, 32 Math, 29 science)

ECs
all over the place. CSF member for 7 semesters, various clubs and committees, Principal Advisory Board, Global Aspirations Team (w/ Quaglia Institute of Student Aspirations), published poet, lots of community service, etc. nothing that really stands out

Summer Programs
California State Summer School for the Arts for creative writing

Essays
pretty proud of all of them thus far!

Recs
I'm really close with the teachers and counselor who are writing the letters for me, so I'm sure they're all superb

Chances please? thanks!

The UCs dont look at legacy. Your ECs may be a main reason for the deferral.
You must produce a more cogent, focused application. The adcom needs to see exactly what you want to do.

Amherst - low reach
Brown (Deferred ED) - reach
Hamilton - match
Hampshire - low match
Kenyon - low match
Middlebury - match
Pomona - high match
Stanford (double legacy) - reach
UCLA - match
UCSB - safety
UCSC - safety
UCSD - low match
UC Berkeley (legacy) - high match
Vassar - high match

Your GPA, though high, might not be good enough for Berkeley. I hope that doesn’t discourage you from applying there though. Berkeley and UCLA are unlike most top privates wherein they put more value on HS GPA than SATs.

What is your intended major, btw?

Retake SAT in January, despite that you are also submitting the ACT. CR score is way low for Hamilton, Midd, Vassar, Amherst, Pomona, Brown, and Stanford.

BuBBLES; thanks! (:

RML; yea, my counselor said the same thing /= I already submitted my apps for all of the UCs!
my intended major varies slightly from UC to UC, but hopefully something with cognitive science or linguistics.

rhg3rd; Alrighty! of those though, Hamilton, Amherst, Midd, and Stanford don’t accept the January SAT, but I’ll probably retake it anyway for Vassar and Brown! (couldn’t find anything for Pomona).
For the schools that don’t accept January testing, do you think that the 610 will hurt me greatly, despite the 36 / 36 ACT?

“For the schools that don’t accept January testing, do you think that the 610 will hurt me greatly, despite the 36 / 36 ACT?”

NO. They’ll just ignore your SAT I scores and use your ACT 33 composite instead. My reasoning that you should retake the SAT I was partly based on your SAT subjects also not being so impressive.

Your CR 610 was an obvious misfire.

BTW: Not many LAC have much in linguistics. Reed has a department, and Amherst outsources to UMass.

Amherst - high match
Brown (Deferred ED)- suprised?? I think you should have got in. i would say high match
Hamilton- low match
Hampshire - safety
Kenyon - low match
Middlebury - match
Pomona - high match
Stanford (double legacy) - low reach
UCLA - low match
UCSB - ?
UCSC - ?
UCSD - safety
UC Berkeley (legacy) - match
Vassar - match

Amherst and Brown are approximate equal difficulty and are both reaches. Middlebury is as least difficult as Vassar and is a high match. Pomona is a low reach and will know how to interpret California GPA’s.

It is inconceivable that a CA resident doesn’t get into Berkeley but is accepted at Amherst, Brown or Pomona. Similarly, it would be an anomaly for the same at Vassar or Middlebury.

Why Hamilton? Reed College in Portland, OR would be a good choice as it’s about the only LAC with a full linguistics major.

SAT subject tests tell a story of a weak school or possibly of not enough effort for Berkeley et al. Don’t send them anywhere unless required.
