I’m a California resident. Applying to these schools among others
USC
UCB
UCLA
UCSD
SAT: 2270 (720 CR 800M 750W)
Gpa: unweighted 3.76 weighted UC: 3.90 Weighted 9-12: 3.97
Subject tests: 780 math II 800 Physics
Baseball 4 years
Applying for physics major
Pretty solid essays – I think I communicated my passion for physics well.
The UCs put very heavy emphasis on your unweighted UC GPA, which may be a little low for Berkeley and LA. However because you have high SAT and subject scores, I will assume that your school is very competitive and academically advanced? I think you are a little lacking on the EC side (unless you’re some baseball superstar). Do you have other ECs like clubs, community service, work experience? Good luck!!
Bump
USC: Reach
UCB: Reach, but probably easier than USC
UCLA: Similar to UCB
UCSD: High match/low reach
You have great test scores, but your grades simply aren’t up to par with the average. You would have a better shot with stronger ECs, which top 3 in your list value. UCSD is more numerically based, but again, your GPA is low.
Best of luck!

To a certain extent, of course GPA matters. But I think with your high SAT and great physics subject score, they’ll be sure to think carefully rather than discounting your application (even at USC and UCB). This may be personal bias haha but I USC will probably be easier that UCB. Having physics related ECs, showing you sought education in the area may be helpful, like catfanatic6 noted.
Lurkertoposter thanks! I hope they give my application a good look.
Especially for the UC’s, your stats will be heavily emphasized. While your testing is good, your GPA is below average. So probably Reach/low reach for UCB and UCLA. depending on your essays (or it could even go down to high match!).
Chance back?

bump?
USC-high match
UCB-low reach
UCLA-lowreach
UCSD-high match/low reach
I think although uc’s do care about gpa a ton, I do think your sat score does make up for that. I think your best shot is at ucsd because I’ve literally lurked on a ton of ucsd accepted threads and I see similar stats as yours that have been accepted. (high sat, low gpa) But then again, honestly anything is possible with ucsd ;\ Best of luck!
@sarale Thanks! Believe me I’ve lurked all of them.
Thanks for chancing me! I really appreciate it. I would say…
USC - Reach but much higher chance than Berkeley b/c they emphasize SAT > GPA from what I’ve heard. So I would say a Reach/Low reach.
UCB - Reach. Hardest here for you.
UCLA - Lower reach, like on par with USC.
UCSD - High match.
If you get into Cal, you should go. One of my closest friends just started there for neuroscience and he’s in love with the science programs there.
@starkly I definitely would. It’s my number 1
Depends on your ECs but I think USC UCB UCLA are reaches for anyone. I’d say UCB is a reach. And USC/UCLA are low reaches. UCSD i’d say High Match. Best of Luck!
Good chance. My friend had similar stats and got into your top 3 schools but with a higher gpa. Chance me back please!
@MrIvyLeague @Ballerina11 Thanks!
I think you have a good chance at uscd, the others are reaches
UCB- Reach
UCLA- Reach
USC- Low Reach
UCSD- High Match/Low Reach
I think the GPA may hold you back from UCB but other than that I think you will be accepted to all of them.
I think that with really good test scores like yours, you stand a shot. Those are generally a very good indicator of intelligence, and discrepencies with your GPA can be explained, but you’ll have to try very very hard. As people have said before, assuming you come from a challenging, competitive school, that is something you should definately explain in your application. Work it into an essay if possible, and if not convey it in the explanation section on the app. Above all, make sure you emphasize way more activities and community service than you listed here. I’m really hoping Baseball isn’t the only EC you have to offer. Whatever it is, make sure that your passion outside the classroom is equally as highlighted as that in it.
Good luck!
