These are just some schools that I hope to get into but are not the only ones I’m applying to. Do you think i will get in? Would you be surprised? I’m applying as a physics major if that weighs into your decision.
GPA UC weighted:3.90
GPA UC Unweighted: 3.5
(My GPA cumulative is a little higher in both categories – i did well in 9th and am doing well in 12th but I think UC’s care most about 10-11th.
SAT 1: 2270 (720CR 800M 750W)
SAT 2: 800 Physics 780 Math 2
I think my essays were pretty good – I talked genuinely about my passion for physics instead of conjuring up any extenuating circumstances that made my 3.9 a miracle. I stayed away from excuses as I’m fairly privileged.
EC’s: Baseball 4 years, Hiking, Music(Guitar and Piano at home not organized), but nothing terribly impressive.
White Male income fluctuates 150,000-200,000
I realize I’ve made a few similar Chance posts but none this comprehensive and this time I included my UC unweighted which in my eyes may have kept other posts from yielding accurate results.
Drop a link if you want my two cents on a post of yours
Thanks in advance!
UCB: mid reach
UCLA: slight reach
UCSD: safety
Your SAT is much better than average UCSD freshies.
(don’t worry about chancing me back, also PrepScholar will help you. It has a chance tool.)
@QuadiNorth thanks. Although in my opinion the prepscholar tool uses flawed logic – it assumes that if you have the average SAT and GPA for a certain college then your chance is their admission rate. (But I don’t mind the results it produces cause it weights SAT heavily)
I think the only reach is UCLA. It’s definitely possible for you to get in, your test scores are very high. Hopefully they make up for the GPA, as I’m in a similar position.
Great SAT, but it does not make up (much) for low GPA, where the later is the king (at UCs). I think you have very good chances for the mid- tiered UCs such as UCI, UCSB & UCD, but for the top tiers:
It seems like you have a good SAT score which will help but I know the Cal schools place such a heavy emphasis on GPA the scores will help cover for you GPA a bit but not enough to make up completely for the GPA. ECs look like run of the mill activities unless you’re a star baseball player. Overall you are a competitive candidate but without the GPA and any real unique Ec’s I’d say UCB and UCLA are going to be reaches (albeit on the lower end) and UCSD will be a high match. Still you never know what could happen. Best of luck to you!
The first 5 posters clearly don’t know what they are talking about. I would agree with uclaparent9 about UCSD, but I think UCB is a reach.
Also, you aren’t telling us your UC GPA… There is no such thing as UC UW GPA and UC W GPA… it is called UC GPA and it only takes into account of 6 semesters worth of AP, IB, honors, or CC classes.
UC GPA (capped weighted) takes into account 8 semesters of UC approved Honors/AP/IB or DE courses. UCLA and UCB also look at the (uncapped weighted UC GPA) which is unlimited honors points. Of course EC’s and essays will be considered and difficult to predict.
SATs are well in line with every school you mentioned; that will not hurt you, nor do I think your choice of a physics major will as you are very qualified in that subject area. The weak point may be the unweighted GPA. I think you stand a good shot of getting into the majority of these schools.
UCB- Would be surprised if you get in because of your gpa
UCLA- I would peg it at 50/50 maybe your SAT scores compensate for the GPA
All other UC’s would be surprised if you don’t get in because frankly if you don’t get in who will?

I’d say you have a great chance at UCSD, but your GPA might be a little bit low for UCB and UCLA, but it’s quite possible your test scores make up for that. I’d put UCB and UCLA in the middle to high reach category.
Berkeley is a reach, just due to your GPA and lack of ECs.
UCLA is a slight reach, again, your GPA is holding you back a bit, but UCLA likes numbers and you have quite impressive test scores.
UCSD is definitely a match, maybe even a low match/safety-ish.
The rest of the UCs should be a slam dunk.
