Chances got Getting into UCSB, UCLA, UCD, UCI, and UCSD for a CALIFORNIA RESIDENT?

i still have one more chance to take the sat, so lets say i get a 2100. would that gaurantee me into atleast the mid uc's?

Nothing is ever guaranteed. If you do succeed and get a 2100 on the SAT, it may still look very awkward on your application.

To admissions officers, it is better to have a high GPA and a low SAT score, rather than the other way around. Having a high GPA signifies that you are a "smart and capable" person, but a low GPA might be an indicator that you are a lazy person. Colleges don't want lazy people.

On the other hand, if you have a low SAT score ("hmm, maybe not so "smart and capable to start off with"), but a high GPA ("wow, he really does work hard though"); hard-working people is what colleges want.

Besides, you would still need at least Two SAT2 scores in the 600 range. Your 610 is fine, but the other 510 really, really hurts.

"nothing against cal poly slo, its a great school and my sister went there, but the admission averages for admitts, i believe, was a 3.7 and less than 1800 sat."

It's actually about 3.85 and 1250 (old). However, you are correct that those scores are not close to those of ucla and cal.

Poly SLO is also one school where your major makes a huge difference in admissions. The college of agriculture has averages around 3.6/1150. Colleges of engineering and math and science, however, have averages around 3.9 and 1270.

giants8307, you are incorrect. here is the link to the stats on cal poly slo's own site.

Cal Poly SLO:
http://www.calpoly.edu/%7Einststdy/factbook/fb0506.pdf

go to page 6. the latest stats for fall 05 admits to cal poly are a 3.73 GPA and 1203 SAT. These numbers are not even close to Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD. here are the links to uc berkeley, ucla, and ucsd's stats if you dont take my word for it.

Berkeley:
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles/camp_profiles_ucb.html

UCLA:
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles/camp_profiles_ucla.html

UCSD:
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles/camp_profiles_ucsd.html

Cal Poly's stats are even slightly below those of mid tier uc's like uci/ucsb/ucd. i do agree that at cal poly slo the major you choose to apply with can have a huge affect on your admission chances. but pretending that cal poly slo has numbers almost up there with cal/ucla/ucsd is a bit ridiculous. and the last time ucsd/ucla/berkeley posted their old sat averages for admits from fall 2005, UCSD had a 1307 SAT, UCLA had a 1345 SAT, and Berkeley had a 1360 SAT.

Furthermore, your stats posted for engineering admits pretty accurate. for engineering average admitts have 3.81 gpa and 1280 sat. yet the average attendee accepting admission to cal poly slo engineering and attending the program has a 3.71 gpa and 1167 sat.

http://www.ess.calpoly.edu/_admiss/Pdf/Profile06.pdf

there is not way this is comparable to admissions at ucsd ucla and berkeley for engineering. engineering admissions at these three schools and extremely competitive. there average admit in engineering are significantly higher in gpa and sat and their average attendee in engineering is way way above the 3.71 gpa and 1167 sat averages of individuals actually enrolled in the cal poly slo engineering program.

UCChris, you are comparing cal poly attendees with ucb, et. al.'s admitted students. That's not really a fair comparison. You can either compare admitted students from each campus or attending students from each campus. Your last link actually shows the cal poly admitted averages of 3.83 and 1245. Obviously, this is much higher than the average of the students attending.

However, I certainly agree with your point that UCB and UCLA are much more selective than cal poly is.

UCSD, UCLA and UC Berkeley are all significantly more competitive, not just UCLA and Berkeley. If admit average for cal poly slo this year was 1245 and 3.83, UCSD, last year when they used the old sat format was 1307 sat for average admit and well over a 4.0 gpa for average admit. clearly all three top-tier uc's, no matter which way you judge admission, by admitted students average gpa's and sat's or actuall attendees averages sat's and gpa's, ucsd is significantly more difficult to gain admission too. cal poly's average admit gpa is slightly lower than uci/ucsb/ucd, but cal poly slo's average sat is either the same or slightly higher than uci/ucsb/ucd. this clealy meens cal poly slo is about as competitive as a the mid-tier uc's. ucsd is clearly more difficult to gain admission to, as is ucla and uc berkeley. where cal/la/sd's average admits are only slightly higher than their actual attendees, cal poly slo's average admits are significantly higher than their average attendee. cal poly slo's average atendee doesnt even have a 1200 sat. the average attendee has a 1195 sat and 3.71 gpa. this could be because top students use cal poly slo, uci, ucsb, ucd for safeties or safe matches for themselves if they cant get into top tier uc's. this does not meen everyone does this, im just stating that some students look at cal poly in this manner. my sister chose cal poly over ucsd and ucla, because she felt more comfertable there and has not regretted her decision. this is not a bash on cal poly slo, i just feel putting it in admission league with ucsd is not numerically correct. the numbers dont lie.

subzeroman..................

ucchris is right...............whether you want to believe it or not..... about bieng harsh.... i find..... that people on this board are actually really nice in their advice......

trust... me
trying to prove him wrong or saying how others told you you do have a chance is not gonna make a difference.....when the acceptances come back..... you might not be too happy about the results so its better too face the reality... and expect the worse..... just work hard.. and try to improve, your stats as much as possible.....

apply to all those places and any where else you want, but do yourself a favor and don't expect to get in everywhere.... just because somebody said so.....your life will be so much easier in april......

UCChris: I'm not sure if you were responding to my post or not, but I would certainly never say cal poly is as selective as UCSD.
