chances @ guarenteed admission programs

I am a Grade 11 student in Canada and will be applying to the following universities for their accelerated/joint degree dental programs:
Villanova/UPenn
Adelphi/Tufts
Boston U
VCU
Detroit Mercy

Feel free to evaluate my chances at any of them.

Stats:
GPA: 86.5%
SAT I: 1410 - will be taking the NEW sat in June

Sports-
JV Football - Gr 9
JV Basketball Gr 10
V volleyball gr11

ECs
Cayley, Pascal Math contests
Avogadros chem contest
bio contest
basketball and volleyball coach
80 volunteer at Dentist office

Marks in Math and Science classes are exceptional but electives courses bring my average down.

i live in richmond.... i try to get more ec's... and volunteer at hospitals and stuff. also boost your gpa.

i try really hard to boost my gpa but i dont know if it will be possible, i go to one of the most highly regarded schools in Toronto. my courseload for this year and next is extremely difficult. although i think i will be able to pull it up to an 88%.

also in Canada 85% and above is considered a 4.0

thats redonk

85% and above is considered a 4.0?!!!

calm down, 85% is really difficult to acheive!
i am from Canada as well, i only have 84% GPA, it's a 4.1-4.2 on a 5.0 scale but also a 4.0 on the 4 point scale
1410 is really good since our education system does not prepare us for standardize testing
i think you have great chance
i only have a 1400, unfortunately, i do not have the luxury to retake (hoping to get in to a good school:() i am a senior. currently accepted at University of Waterloo :), hoping to get in to Dartmouth or Penn lol, kind of reach, but finger crossed :)
Do you go to A.Y Jackson? Unionville? R.H.King Academy???
which one?

85% is way too mediocre in the U.S. Maybe your guys school system is just way harder, but I doubt it. Oh and just to let you know, our school system--well, at least mine--doesn't prepare you for standardized tests...Smartguy, I definately think you have a chance. Why not apply to the University of Toronto...I read somewhere that its "Canada's Best Export"

If its a "guaranteed admission program" then why is there any question of chances?

when you get accepted to undergrad, you are also accepted to the affiliated schools dental school, and you finish both your BS and DDS in 6 or 7 years. that is what the "guarenteed" refers to

in reply to the above message, i am applying to both American and Canadian schools. obviously the schools i listed above are my first choices, I won't have any problems getting into any Ontarian universities with my average but I would really like to be accepted to a dental school right out of high school and have that burden off of my chest

"85% is way too mediocre in the U.S. Maybe your guys school system is just way harder, but I doubt it."

It's not that the material is harder, just that it's graded harder. Like you would amost never get in the 90s on a easy, and 100% would be ridiculous.

does this mean that i would have almost no shot of getting in. a friend of mine who had an 89% average got into the VCU BS/MD combined degree program this year

to put into the perspective the ontario school system, anyone over 80% is a scholar, and i remember my guidance counselor telling my a 93% puts you into the top 1% in the province

I wouldn't be able to tell you...I still don't understand how over 80% is a scholar...but I guess I will never b/c I never went to high school in Canada.

"85% is way too mediocre in the U.S. Maybe your guys school system is just way harder, but I doubt it."

My school is located in a very affluent neighbourhood where parents put a lot of pressure on their kids to succeed in school. Now while our school has only been around for 4 years, we were ranked by Maclean's Magazine (one of the premier publications in Canada) to be a top 40 school. Throughout all the years, the highest recorded overall GPA at the end of the year was a 94%. Usually only 3-4 people achieve GPA's in the 90s, despite the fact that the majority of the students at the school are very dedicated overachievers.

But it all depends on the school once again. It is not fair to say that ALL Canadian schools mark harder. For example, a school 10 minutes from ours has a much different student body. Parents in this area do not put anywhere near the amount of emphasis on school work and students do not apply themselves as much, but it is not uncommon to find 10 people in the 93% - 97% range. (Both schools have approx. the same number of students per grade). My best friend is in this range and after seeing the amount of work and level of marking done at my school, he agrees that his school inflates the marks quite a bit.

So I'd have to say that an 85% in Ontario on average would put a person in the top 8-5%.

lol i appreciate all of the info and such about the Ontario vs. US school systems but all of this info is irrelevant

if there are any Ontarians out there who had similar averages as mine and applied to the US your input would be extremely extremely appreciated

now that you mention dental schools, Aim me at Sqingx or MSN me at jack_frost429@hotmail.com
i'll tell you a really good program
and we can get to know each other, I applied to a dental program myself and I am from Ontario
