Chances of acceptance

i was wondering what my chances were of being accepted to the college of engineering (i want to study mechanical engineering). I finished applying late November. I don't meet the automatic admission. I am in the top 25% of my class and a 3.7 GPA, i have a 1780 SAT score and a 28 ACT score. what are my chances of being accepted?

Is your 3.7 GPA weighted?

What are your volunteer, ECs and Leadership? They really look at stuff like that if you aren't an automatic admit.

i'm 265/1164 in my class and i have a 3.7 weighted average. i've taken about 4 AP classes. i played baseball for about 6 years. i've been working about 28-30 hours a week for the past two years. I was also with something called the Police Explorers for two years. We did a bunch of community service for the city. i was promoted to Cpl. Is a 3.7 bad??? i thought it was ok cause i'm in the top quarter of a HUGE school.

SAT of 1780 is low. What are your M/CR scores? Those are the ones that matter. Are these comm. service/EC/Leadership current and active? Have you thought about corps? If you decide to do corps, they are more lenient on the admissions....oh, wait, are you a senior now? A 3.7 WEIGHTED average is not that high....but you never know what they will look at. At my competitive 5A school, that would be in the bottom half of the class. Good luck, though! I know a couple of friends who applied in Nov-Dec and just missed the auto admit by 20 SAT points and another by 1 ACT point and they still haven't heard. I hope you get in. TAMU is AWESOME!!!

even though my scores aren't high for those nerds out there, are they good enough to get me in? so does that mean i dont have a good chance? is a 28 ACT alright?

Hey man, no need to hate. You asked. A lot of non-nerds have great stats, too.

well, a lot of people tell me my grades arent that bad. most say they are good enough to get into a&m. I just wanted a staright answer, yes or no. its just when people think your scores arent good enough, they still tell you that they're good so they dont hurt your feelings. i dont know any of you guys so it wont bother me. yes or no?

It's anyone's guess. On their admissions website, it gives you a breakdown of what they consider important for non-auto admits. Take a look there. What is your UW GPA? I think that is what they look at. Engineering and business will be harder to get into than Liberal Arts/Sciences. Have you shown lots of interest, met with the Mech. Engr. dept. people and all? Your 28 is probably a better bet to go with. If you got a 4 or 5 on your AP exams, did you send those? I do know many kids that have stats similar to yours with a lot of ECs and leadership that got in last year.

well, thanks. i was just wondering, what states have a gpa of 6.0? cause i was looking and some kids gpa was on a 6.0 scale. i'm here in texas and we have a 5.0 and 4.0 scale

My school has a GPA scale of a 6.0. I currently have a 6.1, the highest you can get is something like 6.7... yeah and i'm in Texas, Houston to be exact. You're grades aren't bad at all, I got into a&m and i'm no. 106/636 at a competitive high school, my SAT was 1650 but then again i got into liberal arts. I don't know much about the engineering program. Also, a friend of mine was 132/636 and got in with lower SAT scores than mine.

thanks dude. i never knew that some schools had a 6.0 scale

rorydude, nobody here can give you a yes or no. We don't know...we can only guess. Have you thought about the Corps? Since you did Police Explorers, I thought you might be interested in something like that. My S is in the Corps and he loves it.

You can go here for more info: Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets: Forging Leaders of Character . If you aren't sure, you could do "spend the night with the corps" (there's info on the website about it) to see what it's like. If you talk to Corps recruiting and commit to being in the Corps, I'm almost sure you'd get admitted to the university. It's a big plus in the admissions decision.

A 3.7 is not bad, of course. However, they are more interested in your unweighted GPA. Every school weights differently, so weighted GPA's don't mean a whole lot. Class rank is much more important. You are in the top 25% of your class, but near the bottom of the top 25%. Because of that, they'd like to see a higher SAT score. That would tell them that you are probably just at a very competitive school. In other words, you are plenty smart, but you are going to school with lots of other plenty smart kids, and that's why your class rank isn't higher.

Your extracurricular stuff looks good, so that should help. You still didn't tell us what your SAT score is with just the critical reading & math sections (no writing). That's what admissions is looking at, so we can't really see how good a candidate you are without that info.

well, my sat scores arent that great. 1180 reading and math. I always do bad on the english portion of tests. I got a 540 enlgish and a 640 math. most of you are telling me that these scores suck so i went and took the ACT on campus (had to drive 3 1/2 hours to get there). since i took them on campus, the scores are only going to a&m. I got a 28 composite. 26 enlgish, 29 math, 30 reading, 28 science. I know my ACT scores are better than my sat scores. hopefully my act is good enough to get me into a&m. I was looking on collegeboard.com and the average ACT score is between a 24-28. i know they look at the higher scores and my act are higher. Will my act scores get me into a&m? also, does going to the campus to take the test increase my chances because it shows that i have a lot of interest in the school?

rorydude, that is GREAT that you drove there and did so well on the ACT!!! Those scores are def in the range to get in.....I hope you do! Good luck!

i hope i get in too. thanks :)
