Chances of gettign in as an engineering major?

Sorry, I know you must really get tired of these threads, but I really wanted to hear what people who attend/may attend A&M think of my acceptance chances.

I'm not in the top 10% of my graduating class, but I'm close. I'm agonizingly close to being an automatic admit through my SAT score. I plan on retaking the SAT because of that, but I'm going to assume the worst and see what everyone puts my chances at as a review admit.

I'd really like to major in aerospace or ocean engineering, but my grades/test scores in math are usually pretty low. If it doesn't pan out, I'd be alright with going in undeclared and transferring in to engineering.

GPA - 3.9 W, 3.3 UW (heavy courseload, all advanced/AP when possible)
SAT - 2080 (710 CR, 550 M, 790 CR, 11 essay)

I hold an important leadership position in band, which I've been involved in for all of my high school career. I've gotten awards for it as well. I'm also in Academic Decathlon and I've gotten some awards on a high level for that.

Also, my essays should be pretty good. They're (thankfully) my strong point.

What do you think my chances are? Also, I plan on joining the Corps - does that raise my chances at all?

EDIT: Typo in the title, can't fix it. D: -fail-

Your stats are very similar to a good friend of my S and he got in. I would recommend that you sign up for the ACT as another way to get the auto-admit. It’s better to do that than to sweat it out later!

i think you have an excellent chance of admission Aggie2015. I hope you have gone on an official campus visit, visited the college of engineering, maybe done a camp offered to high school jr/sr students. All these things +applying early will help.
Your math SAT is not strong, that would be the only only question for engineering. But your wanting to join the corps is a plus.
Good luck.

Your stats are really close to mine except for the math SAT score, which is something I might be worried about. I got in for nuclear engineering  Usually anything under 600 is something to worry about, try raising that and all looks good. I took the SAT and my math score was 570, the next time, 650. So, practice and try again. Try taking your ACT and maybe be an auto admit for that test?

Yes, corps will help you get in but understand engineering is hard and it may be difficult to juggle both corp/academics.

Getting into engineering is harder to do from general studies than from another engineering major, keep that in mind when applying.

I just realized I typed in the wrong math score - I actually got a 580. Not a huge difference, but I need every point I can get when it comes to math.

I understand that engineering is ridiculous and the Corps is ridiculous, so combining the two is only for the truly mentally insane. They’re both things I’m very serious about pursuing, so I’m fully prepared to hate every second of my freshman year for it. I’m sure I’ll be severely lacking in sleep, at any rate.

Thanks for the comments, they’re really helping to calm my nerves about the whole process :)

EDIT - I should add that I did take the ACT and it was a train wreck. I’m leaning towards the SAT.

From what I’ve heard from facebook friends who got in and people I’ve talked to, you’re very very close to an easy admission. Like they said, your math score is the only sticking point but if you were going into anything but engineering, admission would be quite likely.

If you’re looking at ocean engineering, are you applying for their satellite campus? I think it’s Galveston or something where they have a great program for ocean engineers.
