Ah ok thank you, I wasn’t depending on that too much. I was wondering if summer academic programs at various well known high schools around michigan and University of Michigan will be beneficial. Also I was looking at the 2009 application for reference and even though my GPA is lower than the average, the majority of my academic classes are honors or AP such as that out of 6 english courses possible, 3 are honors and 2 are AP, 6 math courses, 6 are honors, 8 science, 2 are AP, 7 social science/history, 4 are AP

That’s a lot of academic classes. How did you take 8 science classes, 7 social science/history classes? Are you counting by semesters (meaning 4 years science, 3.5 history)?

They do take into account you schedule. 8 APs is a large number of them, and that’ll help. Keep in mind though, that a lot of people who get accecpted also have similar schedules and much higher GPAs. Though I would bet your schedule is a fair bit better than average.

i’m counting by semesters, in the application isn’t it how they view classes?

Yes but usaually people talk about it in a different way, since most academic classes in highschool are a full year. Reading your first post, I see that it was only 4 APs. Still good but not as much so as I was thinking.

So you only took 3 years of English and 3 years of Math? That will probably be looked down upon unfortunarely.

we usually go by years… so your schedule is fairly normal.

well I am a student who just fininished his junior year of high school. I have planned to take 2.5 science credits, 1 credit AP (Biology), and the .5 credit organic chemistry (a really hard class), 1 credit of AP English, 1 credit of Calculus BC, Spanish 4 (1 below AP Spanish), and .5 credit elective (but to fulfill a requirement of P.E.). So in other words, I’m taking 3 more AP classes and one relatively difficult class

Oh yeah I forgot to list my accomplishments/awards. In my freshman year I got a 1 ranking (best possible grade/rank) in MSBOA solo&ensemble for both regionals and state levels for my solo. At the science Olympiad regionals I have gotten 1 first place spot, 4 third place, 4 fifth place, and a 2 seventh places out of more than 25 schools over the past three years in my events. I’m sure I have some more but I cannot recall them at the moment.

agreed with blackpen2008.

you’re a good candidate for MSU though.

Not good, I’ve been a diehard fan of University of Michigan for more than a decade and even though I try to be open-minded, it is going to be difficult to apply there. Plus their colleges for pharmacy and dentistry do not appeal to me and I will choose University of Detroit Mercy Dentistry or Wayne State Pharmacy over MSU. Thanks all for the input and I hope that there are more that help with more input and will respond when I get my results of my admission.

azntenis8, I’m confused by what you’re saying.

By the time you graduate, how many classes in each subject (in years) would you have taken, and how many APs. They WILL consider what you take your senior year, even if they don’t see the grades at first.

OP the least you can do is apply, just don’t count of an acceptance ofcourse ( no one really does), but those chances are not ruled out.

Sorry for the confusion
PE:1.5 years with 1 year being required
.5 year for health (also required)
3 years of honors math and 1 year of the higher Calculus AP my senior year
3 years of science and 1 year (chem ap) AP class taken and physics&AP Biology&organic chemistry taken in my senior year
1.5 years of social studies with 2 years of AP (Economics and US history)
3 years of Spanish with Spanish 4 my senior year
.5 year of an elective (accounting)
2 years of honors english and 1 year of ap english taken and 1 year of AP english to be taken my senior year
.5 year for computer class (requirement)
2 years of fine arts (band)
so in total:26.5 credits taken out of 22.5 required to graduate.

Also at this point, since I am taking summer school and at this rate, my GPA will rise to 3.6 recalculated michigan GPA and 3.7 overall gpa

Okay, your chances are looking better. You’d still want to apply elsewhere, but you have a shot.

will it hurt that I desire to go to pharmacy or dentistry (LSA) or should I just apply just for LSA

You can’t apply to pharmacy or dentistry from high school. You can only apply to LSA, CoE, Nursing, Art and Design, Music, Kinesiology, Interarts Performance and Ross.

Ok thanks, what would be more beneficial to be more interesting to U of M, pharmacy or dentistry?

Taking pre-pharmacy or pre-med courses (which is pretty much the same). Just do the pre-med track.

azn, you can write chance me threads til the cows come home. Just apply and apply early! You are instate so UofM will understand your GPA in the context of your school and your ACT is just fine. Just apply!

Thanks cdz, and momofthreeboys, I have already started my essays, asked recommendations before summer vacation started, and have a copy of the old application so I know what to put in. Oh yeah, my AP test scores are not that great, should I still include them?
