Chances of getting AES awards at UTD?

My Stats:

I moved this summer, and my new school’s GPA scale is out of 6.0, so I’m not sure exactly what my GPA would be at the new school.

SAT: 1530

GPA: Old school: 3.8 UW 4.35 W. (will likely be 5.0/6.0 or something like that at new school)

Rank: Old school: Doesn’t rank New School: Ranks students, hopefully in top 30%

SAT II: Planning on taking Math II and Physics, but I’ve heard UTD doesn’t look at them.

APs/IBs: Junior year: AP Physics 1, IB English 11, IB Spanish 11, AP Comparative Government

Senior year: Planning to take AP Comp Sci, AP Psych, AP Macro/Micro Econ, IB Spanish 12, IB English 12 or AP Lit, and AP Calc AB

Honors: Took 9 honors courses so far got mostly As, a few Bs, and two Cs.

Look here:

They won’t look at anything prior to 9th grade. They consider ec’s but put the most weight on SAT/ACT, GPA and rank.

I think my SAT and GPA are decent, but I’m just worried about my class rank. Would you say I have to be to 15%?

I’m only familiar with GPA’s on 4.0 scale or 100 point scales so I can’t comment on your GPA but I have heard of a kid being knocked out of AES for a C grade. Remember only the top 24% of entering freshmen are awarded any AES.

UTD is attracking more and more high stat applicants each year so each year the requirements for AES go up. Apply as early as you can for your best chance.

Thanks for the advice! Do you know if UTD looks at SAT subject tests?

@sra272 that’s a good question and one I’ve wondered about too. I know they don’t look at subject tests for admission but AES and admissions don’t look at the same things the same way. Admissions won’t “supper score” the SAT but they do for AES. My guess is that they look at it subject tests but they won’t give them as much weight as SAT/ACT, GPA and rank. I also know that course rigor plays an important roll too.

After not finding anything specific on Google I called UTD and asked about AES and SAT subject tests and was told that they don’t even accept subject tests! My credit card and my ds20 will be very happy about this! UTD sends a college rep to my kids’ high school in early fall and I’ll ask him to verify this with them then, you might want to do the same.

I also found a thread on UTD reddit called AES Denied you might want to google it (pretty sure I can’t post a link here) it might give you some insight on where you stand.
