Chances of getting in?

<p>I'm currently a 17 year-old Junior in High School that is looking into my options for the future. My sister and dad both attended UW, and I have been visiting it quite often in the past year or so. I've always had a fascination with technology and working things out, and was drawn to engineering from a very young age. For a little background information:</p>

<p>GPA:
Un-Weighted - 3.2
Weighted - 3.5</p>

<p>Classes taken (or have registered for senior year):

Language - Honors Language (freshman), Honors Language (sophomore), AP Language
Social Studies - Honors World Studies, US History, AP Government & Politics
Foreign Language - Spanish (three years)
Fine Arts: Visual Communications (two years)
Electives: Computer Repair (two years), Drafting and Engineering</p>

<p>Anticipated senior schedule:
AP Statistics
AP Literature

Computer Programming
Economics</p>

<p>Leadership:
SkillsUSA Chapter Officer - won 3rd place in Computer Repair at state last year, going to state for Computer Repair, Job Interview (or) Extemporaneous Speaking, and Quiz Bowl this year.
Programs - I've been selected to be a group leader in quite a few leadership activities that have been hosted at our school.
ASB - held senator position 6th and 7th grade, Treasurer in 8th, and am currently running unopposed for the newly created A/V Technician position in next year's cabinet.
Community service - I have near 100 hours of community service with projects ranging from food bank to retirement home work.</p>

<p>Athletics:
Football - played from 7th to 9th grade, but had to quit due to a back injury
Track - ran from 6th to 10th grade, but had to give it up this year due to work
Cross country - ran in 10th grade, but same situation as track</p>

<p>Work:
Past - I ran a small computer repair "business" in my community from 7th to 10th grade.
Current - I am in an entry-level, network technician position at my school district's IT department.</p>

<p>Miscellaneous:
- I have been working with computers since around the age of 10, built my first computer around 13, and learned basic Java and HTML freshman year.
- I've spent the last year fixing up a 1988 BMW, and have almost completely re-built the entire car, sans the engine, at this point.
- I have recently gotten back into reading as a hobby, and have been blowing through books like crazy.
- I would LOVE to be accepted into the ROTC program, but I feel as if my chances are slim.</p>

<p>I feel as if, being a middle-upper class white male interested in the field of economics and/or engineering, I might be facing just a bit of strong competition. I know that my low GPA is NOT helping me in any way, but there has been a steady improvement since sophomore year. I was just curious as to what my chances of getting accepted were at the moment, and what I could do to improve them. I also haven't taken the SATs in my highschool career yet, but am registering to do so this spring. If it means anything, I scored around a 1450 in 7th grade.</p>

<p>If anyone has ANY suggestions or advice, please let me know!</p>

<p>Your GPA is below average for the school, but that doesn’t mean you absolutely won’t get in. Your course rigor is great; just try to end the year with a 3.3 or higher. Study hard for the SAT (2100+ is optimal to offset your grades a bit) and demonstrate genuine interest/passion in your essays and you’ll pretty much have done all you can. </p>

<p>Good luck.</p>

<p>the GPA is a problem… this year it seemed like they rejected most people with sub a 3.6 GPA. make sure you ace everything else. one other piece of advice, when you write your essays, make sure they don’t fall into the “technically good, but boring to read” category. PM me if you want more details.</p>

<p>being a legacy helps.</p>

<p>that being said, that GPA is too low.
unless you have 9 eyes, 14 legs, or youre homeless, it’ll be a challenging admissions process.
weak senior schedule as well.</p>

<p>stay safe</p>

<p>A 3.2 is definitely low for UW, but it’s still possible if you write good essays and score well on the SAT, hopefully you’ve improved A LOT from that 1450.</p>

<p>Some tips-Get the GPA up for sure. Try to get within a 3.8-4.0 this semester. Also, go to some enrichment programs at the University this summer. Aim for an SAT of around 1800-2200 (or higher). If I were you, I’d work on your essays this summer.</p>
