Chances of getting in?

Unweighted GPA: 3.23
ACT:25
SAT:1720 Math-610 Critical Reading-520 Writings-590
Slipped up in Chemistry and Physics with C's, but took all my math classes early, with Calc my senior year.
Took Honors Alg2/Trig sophmore year.
4 years of Ice Hockey, 3 years Varsity
Small school, we don't rank students.

Also from NJ

what schools are you applying to ?

Rutgers (which is why I posted it here).
Few others but I just posted this in here and University of Colorado since these are my top schools so I just wanna be somewhat sure if I have good chances of getting in.

What is your weighted GPA? Also, did you take any other honors (or advance placement) courses? I’d say you have a better chance if you are applying to the School of Arts and Sciences.

I don’t know how competitive Rutgers is getting, but I had around the same SAT score (a bit higher on the critical reading section though) and I got admitted. But that was 1 year ago.

I was planning on going to the School of Arts and Sciences for Computer Science.
The only honors class I’ve taken was Honors Alg2/Trig, but technically I’m in the ‘accelerated math’ course, so I took Algebra my 8th grade year and I’m ending with Calculus this year.
I’m retaking the SATs again in October to help my critical reading… I hope. I’m not too good at that section for some reason, but I was happy about my other two scores.

By the way, my GPA of 3.23 is cumlative… if that helps?

you should get in. Getting a C in Physics or Chem is not a big deal. Just make sure you have community service…

I just realized what this question meant cause I forgot Rutgers has 3 schools. I was talking about the New Brunswick one.

As for community service, I got a good amount, I just didn’t list it here. Does it really count that much?

well considering everyone has it, you have to have it too…

That makes sense. But I was thinking like I don’t have a laundry list of things I did community service wise, nor are any of them like “I went to Equador” (like my cousin did) or anything like that, but I do have a fair share of community service…

You dont need Community Service. Rutgers receives a massive amount of applications and do not fool yourself into thinking they will compare your community service to other people because they will probably never look at in most cases.

it doesnt matter what kind of community service it is but you have to have something. you can get in without it but why wouldnt you just put down something?

Of course I would put stuff down! Haha maybe I’m getting too into every little part. I dunno for some reason my low…ish GPA (for my standards at least) and lack of Critical Reading score I got a little nervous about getting into the schools I wanna get into.

Yeah, your GPA might be the one holding you back a bit =(

But, don’t lose hope! What classes do you plan to take for your last year in high school? Any honor classes (I think I asked you this already – sorry if I’m repeating myself)? Also, how was your performance during junior year? If it was better junior and senior year, it shows an upward trend.

And, perhaps, I would try to take the SAT one last time. Critical reading does suck. That was the section I did the worst on the first time I took the test =</p>

Not much for honors classes, but I am taking Calculus, which should help me out a bit. I’m going to need to try harder senior year because the last three years I’ve been very consistent. The only reason my GPA is lower than I’d like is because of Chem and Physics (crappy teachers, but who’s going to believe that?). Other than that I’ve always been ahead in math for my grade. As for other classes, pretty much just LA, which my teacher moved me up in to the class just under honors, but LA isn’t my best subject. Other than that it’s mostly electives. I’ve taken all the classes and electives I’ve wanted so I feel like I’m only filling my schedule to get through the day. Maybe Computer Math (programming class) will help me out since I do want to go for a Computer Science major or Computer Engineer if I could…

And I’m definitely taking the SATs in October for another shot at getting higher in Critical Reading…

getting a C in physics and chem is not going to hold you back much. If you got a C in regular classes its different but if you can get all As and a B in calc 1st marking period and get that reading SAT above 600 then you will get in for sure…

I could manage A’s and rarely B’s my first marking period, but the 600 on Critical Reading SATs seems a bit harder since my vocab is terrible. What if I tried to kick everything up so it would be like 650 math, 620 writing, 550 critical reading?

Don’t kill yourself too much over the SATs though – especially the critical reading section.

I think the test scores for the middle 50% of first years (according to College Board) is 530 - 630. Just try your best to get in between there. But if you can get it up to the scores that you posted (which is good enough for being admitted to the School of Arts and Sciences), then that would be great!

Also, don’t neglect the other sections! That would suck to drop because you focused too much on the critical reading =|

I thought if I sent all my scores they would take the best ones and use it to my advantage?

Oh, yeah . . . they do take into account the higher scores.

I meant to say, since you want to increase your other scores too in the math and reading section (as stated above), make sure you don’t stress over the CR section too much and neglect the math and reading.

I hope it doesn’t rain on test days… (that is a huge factor to me lol) but I feel really good about the scores I have so far in math and writing so while my main focus is going to be critical reading, I can still do pretty well in math and writing without doing a whole lot of practice and preparing.
