chances of getting into colgate?

3.111 gpa, very tough prep school in PA. lots of music, science extracurriculars. 1550/1600 sats in 10th grade, havent gotten the latest sat results back but i expect them to be high.

because i messed up my junior year gpa, i just crossed off every ivy i had on my list. i'm a national merit though; got a 225 on the psat.

my career interests range from neuroscience to music. what are my chances at getting in colgate?

anyone? anyone?

Colgate isn't as strict about GPA as other top LACs. Average HS GPA is 3.6, and 18% have GPAs lower than 3.24.

Needles to say, it's still going to be a reach, especially with a downward trend. Apply early and pimp your music and science extracurriculars. If you make an influential contact with someone in the music department, for example, that person COULD get you in.

less than 50/50 for colgate, Lafayette would probably work though

Average GPA for Class of 2010 (just admitted) was 3.71.

I agree the downward trend doesn't help. I think Colgate would be a reach.

Heavenwood - where did you get the stat that 18% have GPA's lower than 3.24? I haven't seen that before and seems like a large percentage since the average is 3.71. If true I'd guess that most of that 18% is made up of athletic recruits.

That stat is probably for current colgate students. Thanks to the anti-grade inflation at colgate many students have GPA is the low 3s, I think avg is around 3.2 (there are posts about this somewhere, it is something like the 5th most grade Deflated school in the nation)

to the OP: That's an awesome SAT score though

I doubt that 1) Colgate's avg GPA is as high as 3.24 for current students and 2) that the stat is for current students because it's usually much harder to find out that type of info, especially on general college websites and would guess it's for either enrolled or accepted students.

I would say you have a decent shot at ED. In general, I find the listing of avg GPA of accepted students meaningless since high schools have so many different systems and grading policies. In PR, it has that at many schools that the avg high school GPA is 4.0, which is certainly not the case, unless it is weighted or some different kind of scale is being used.

Jrpar, that's the joy of collegeboard my friend! That's where I got my 18% number info. I didn't make this stuff up. As for average HS GPA, say hello to USNews...

Heavenwood, US News stats are based on the class of 2008 (I think this August the rankings and info will be based on 2009 stats for all schools). The info I posted above is from Colgate's website for the class of 2010 and not yet reflected by US News.

I don't know what year collegeboard.com draws their data from, but Colgate's website says that 83% of the class of 2010 is in the top 10%,while collegeboard says 68% - so there's some disconnect here.

In any event I agree it's not meaningful to compare GPA's across high schools. 3.11, even from a highly regarded prep school (and I'm personally familiar with how GPA's are viewed differently for private prep schools), is low for Colgate. The OP's SAT scores will help, but the downward GPA trend is tough.
