Chances of getting into Columbia University?

I'm about to become a sophomore in High School and I just got my scores from Freshman year. I had a 3.4 gpa (yes I know that's low). I had a basic English class, basic biology, and all because of some mix up. Anyways, this year (sophomore year) I'm taking AP European History, AP English, HP Chemistry, and Geometry (They gave me Algebra 1 last year and would't let me take Geometry during summer, but they will let me take Algebra 2/Trig next summer so Junior year I should have Pre-Calculus). I'm taking Spanish 2 as my elective as well. I'm hoping to get into law school which is why I'm taking AP English and AP Euro because you have to write 5 paragraph essays everyday for both classes. For athletics, I'm a wrestler and track runner. I am part of the Science club (one of the key speakers of the club), and this academic club (ran for Freshman representative but lost by one vote) that did community service every other day and I participated in almost each one. What're my chances of getting in so far?

No one is going to be able to chance you from your Freshman year – no one can predict what extracurriculars you’re going to choose to pursuit in the next few years, or what you’re going to excel at. It sounds like you’re taking a good course load this year, work on bringing your grades up! Get ready to study for standardized tests.

It’s good that you’re concerned about college right now, but don’t get too focused on a specific school, you have a lot of time, and your choices might change. Enjoy high school!

Most colleges won’t even look at your freshman year, so do your best to get that GPA up this year. Get As in those AP classes and that will surely help. :)

I feel that this will come down to your essays, letters of recommendation, test scores (highest priority, given your already great academic record), and your community service. Your race does play a factor into this - if you’re Asian, I’d say that it’d be a tough competition. But find something that you truly enjoy, and take it beyond the limits of merely what your school offers. Really stand out from those around you, and you’ll have a great chance.

Also, don’t get too fixed on a single school at this point in your life. There are plenty of great schools out there!
