Hi could someone pls tell me my chances of getting into IMSA. It's my dream. By IMSA I mean the Illinois math and science academy.

My practice SAT scores range from 500-550 per subject (I know, pretty bad, but I'm practicing but I only have until next Saturday)
I have gotten all A's except a B in language arts and literature last year
I think my recommendations should be pretty good

I do love math and science. For English, we had to read nonfiction and out of all the topics, I chose Einstein.

For extracurricular activities, I do debate, interact (a community service club), tennis and golf. I used to do Kumon Math and was the layout and graphics designer for the yearbook in 7th grade. I am also competing in Science Fair this year.

Also, I am in all honors classes and in geometry for math and biology for science. I am a freshman, and took all accelerated classes in middle school

Thanks for your help!

I did get a 4.0 unweighted GPA the first semester of my freshman year and 5.566 weighted (low due to electives).

I also applied for the 2017 school year as a Freshman, so I can hopefully see you there!

From what I can tell, you should be fine. The SAT averages for last year were around 610 for Reading and 680 for Math, but don’t worry, those are averages. Your GPA is excellent and should be fine. (My SAT scores were 630 and 680 for Reading and Science respectively but my GPA is much lower than yours. I had two two B’s in Grade 7)

You do a lot of great extracurriculars, which is excellent. It’s good that you do sports as well as math/science related e.c’s. (I do Speech Team, Math Team, Scholar Bowl, Key Club)

But yeah, you should be fine. As long as your recommendations and essays are as good as your GPA/e.c’s. you’re golden. Tell me about the awards you’ve won!

Lol. My sat scores were 480 reading and 600 math.

Most of my awards were from kumon and the rest from science fair. I did get this one award from the president and a few debate awards. How about you?

Do you think you’ll make it. I think I won’t.

I didn’t put any Science awards on my application because I had never done Science Fair before this year. What I did have was a bunch of Math awards for events such as SWIC and ICTM. My three non Math/Science awards were a 1st JV Extemp (Dat speech variant of debate), 1st Superior IHSA Music, and 1st Piano Duet.

I wouldn’t worry too much about SAT scores though. Sure it can be important, but it’s only a bit of your application. Your GPA and others matter a lot as well, so don’t stress over it. The Acronym has a nice little graphic showing incoming SAT scores for the class of 2016 by region, if you want to compare. <a href=“First Ever “IMSA By the Numbers:” November Edition – The Acronym | IMSA's Official Student Newspaper”>https://sites.imsa.edu/acronym/2013/11/22/first-ever-imsa-by-the-numbers-november-edition/

Do I think I’ll make it? I seriously have no idea whatsoever. Admissions Committee meets soon and I’m really nervous about that. It’s competitive and my poor grades from a while ago could definitely impact my chances of getting in. You on the other hand, should be fine. I’m fairly confident that you will be accepted based on your e.c’s and GPA. If your recommendations are good like you said, then you have a very good chance.

And an award from the president? That’s awesome! Great job on that :)

Thanks. I think you’ll make it. How were your teacher reviews? My friend got an 1950 sat but has horrible teacher reviews and may still make it

My teacher reviews should be fine. They seem to like me enough, haha. And horrible teacher reviews can makes it really iffy to get in. 1950 is a good SAT score though. I got 2020 overall but I’ve seen like 2300s.

Well, good luck too you. Even if we don’t make it in it won’t be the end of the world.

Thanks for the encouragement. The same goes for you. Good luck! Who knows, we might be seeing each other sometime soon.

Yeah. Let’s be sure to comment on here again once we get the letters…of doom. Lol jk

Of course! There are 6 weeks to go… Oh, the dread D:

Yeah. Is your family expecting that your going to make it in?

They’re Asian, so yeah. Haha, I do want to go though.

Yeah same here. I’m Indian

Haha, I have an Indian friend who decided not to apply to IMSA even though he definitely could get in.

Hi guys!

Sorry for just barging in like this…but I’m applying to IMSA as well this year as a Freshman, and I’m honestly freaking out. I think your chances are pretty great. Anything around the SAT score averages is pretty safe I would say, but obviously don’t take my word on it. Both of you seem to have a pretty good chance, so hopefully I’ll see you guys next year! :)) These next 6 weeks are going to be the worst. Your GPAs and ECs are pretty good as well.

Good luck to both of you! Hoping to seeing you guys next year!

How does one have a 5.56?

Their school have probably a messed up way of calculating GPA. I’m taking all honors with straight A’s, and my weighted GPA is only 4.3 so that’s so not fair haha.

Yeah ours is out of 6.5

Interesting. I’ve never heard of a 6.5 grading schedule before.
