I’m currently a junior in high school, and my dream school is NYU Stern. Could someone please tell me my chances of getting in because I know it is a highly selective school. Here are my stats:
GPA: Weighted- 4.3 and Unweighted- 3.9
SAT: Currently, I have a 1280 on the SAT, but I am doing Prep Scholar’s tutoring plan which guarantees at least 160 more points. So, I should be score at least a 1440.
Classes:
Freshmen: all honors classes
Sophomore: all honors classes and AP environmental
Junior: AP literature, AP calculus ab, and only regular class was US history
Senior: I will be taking these classes AP microeconomics, AP calculus BC, finite, AP language, AP french, AP psychology, and government.
GPA is good but I’d suggest you work hard on getting your SAT significantly higher even than your current target. For Stern class of 2023 (latest Stern specific figures) mean accepted SAT was 1492, vs NYU overall median SAT of 1480 (for class of 2024, overall NYU admitted SAT is 1500).
No senior year science class?
What ECs do you have?
Yes, I am planning to put in a lot of work getting my SAT up. No, I won’t be taking a senior year science class because my school only requires 3 years of science.
Extracurriculars:
- President of French Club
- Multicultural club
- JV/Varsity golf
- I tutor math for algebra 1&2, precalculus, and geometry.
- I give piano lessons to kids.
- Champions Together Track and Field (assisting special needs kids in track)
- National Honor Society
Ok. Bear in mind that competitive colleges often want to see you do more than the minimum your school requires. Stern had an 8% admit rate last year.
FYI NYU says: “ Our top applicants have taken demanding coursework in the above subjects for four years.”
So it’s not an absolute requirement to take 4 years but you should realize that many of the students competing with you for a place will have done 4 years of each of English, history/social studies, math, lab science, and foreign language.

Even as a business school, do you think they would like to see me take more science courses?
I think all the most competitive schools like to see that. Where else are you planning on applying?
Ok. I want to apply to IU Kelley and UC Berkeley. But my ED will be NYU.
As a general recommendation for a competitive application I’d suggest you take a 4th science. And get that SAT up. Good luck!
Well, with a private school like NYU, you have the admissions…and then you have the REAL screening–the tuition bill. Those are the two obstacles you have to overcome to attend there. Prestige, no matter how deserving, is rarely affordable. My advice, don’t get hung-up on one school. Put together a good list of target and safety schools you’re serious about. Focus on schools in your home state.
