Chances of getting into Summer or Fall 2014

Hello,

I applied to Penn State University Park on September 1st and my GPA is 3.6 and 1660 SAT. I am also heavily involved in clubs and extra-curriculars. Does anyone have any thought or input of if I'll get into either fall or summer session of 2014. Thank you very much.

A bit low on the SAT’s, you’ll probably be offered to go to a branch campus, and transfer here in 3 years. The lowest I’ve heard in terms of SAT out of my friends here at Penn State was a low 1700s.

You never know! Maybe they will offer summer before
Another campus. Stay positive and good luck!
Please post and let us know what your decision is.

Your SAT is too low. You will probably be put into branch campus. BTW Penn State doesnt care at all about clubs etc. Your GPA and SAT are 2/3’s of admissions decision. However from what I seen SAT scores are far more important than GPA. If you increase to 1800 you now have average chance to get in.

BTW I work in admissions so ask away!

What is the lowest ACT they will take?? And do they only take in account the highest test score? I feel penn state wants that all around student population. I’m surprised they don’t look at the applicants resume.

anxiousmom…obiwan’s first CC post was 2 yrs. ago as a student, about their own PSU branch campus admission. I assume s/he is still a student so this “I work for admissions” comment should not be misunderstood to mean this is an admissions official. Obi, if I am wrong about your level of expertise, apologies. But caveat emptor, everyone

On the website, and all during the tour, they tell you GPA is 2/3 and SAT/ACT is 1/3 of admission decision. They don’t even look at recommendation letters.

Sorry Guys
I should have made myself more clear!
First of all:
I am a student who works for admissions office at PSU. I am not a admissions counselor in any way however, since I do work for them I have seen enrollment statistics for past years and including this year. Also I have talked to various admissions counselors and they told me how Penn State admits its students.

That being said:

When I said Penn State doesnt look at extracurricular, what I meant to say is that admissions counselors only skim through that portion of application. This includes essay and letters of Rec(optional). Penn State is a state school. They really dont care too much about the student body diversity but rather real hard numbers, GPA and SAT. They want to see great promises in those areas because in the end, their ranking and reputation goes up by how strong their SAT and GPA is.

But from what I have seen, SAT/ACT is far more important in getting enrolled at Penn State other than GPA. I can usually tell just from SAT scores if you are going to be accepted for Summer, or Fall or put into branch. Penn State does this again because GPA coming in through thousands of high schools throughout the USA and world are not standardized, they are not controlled. There can be high schools that are easier to get that A in AP courses, while others not so much. This is why Penn State looks at SAT/ACT scores greatly. Those tests are standard and it really measures students ability to succeed because its a controlled environment/material standard throughout the board. (however, IMO SAT scores really dont say too much about student success, but that topic is for another time! :P)

Onto the GPA, Penn State says in its website that it uses weighted GPA, however this is not true! What usually happens is that certain high schools are different weights on the GPA, like honors/AP courses and it really isn’t fair to others students that one high school gives 10 credit GPA points averaged in while another for the same course only gives for example 5 GPA credit points. (I can confirm this for a fact because when I looked at my own enrollment stats, in Penn State system they used my UW GPA).

Penn State kinda calculates their own GPA. They take all your courses and average in with no weight added in! For engineering and science, they only mostly look at math/science courses.

I hope this helps for any “misconceptions”.
If you have any more questions, ask and Ill try my best.

Cheers!

Obwian22, I have a 27 ACT and a 3.46 UW GPA. What do you think my chances of getting in for fall 2014 are?

I would say average chance. Your ACT is right in the ball park for for an average student at University Park. You should be fine.

Obwian22, I scored 1980 on the SAT. I am an international student but I almost have straight As (11 subjects in total). Do you think I have a chance to be admitted?
Oh and btw, my interview is this week. Any tips? :)

book05. You will get in for sure.

Cheers!

obwian22, i have a 31 ACT and 3.1 gpa…chances?

Obwian22, I have a 29 ACT score and a 3.35 UW and a 3.7 W! Chances!? Does ethnicity count for anything?! I’m Hispanic btw

There’s an old saying. Those who know are silent, those who don’t talk.
It is hard to say if the expert here works at admissions but considering PSUs strict adherence to FERPA laws it is unlikely a student has access to confidential admissions information.
PSU has a system to re weight grades to account for the differences between school systems. Does anyone think a school of this size doesn’t? How silly. Use caution you don’t know who you are getting advice from

Everyone, please stop sending me ACT/SAT’s and GPA for me to evaluate if you will get accepted or not! I am not an admissions God or anything like that! There are far too many factors other than GPA and SAT/ACT to get accepted or not. For example, if your high school courses are honors, AP, regular etc etc. As of this point on, I will not be evaluating anymore chances. I can only help lead you in the right direction by giving you average student data enrollment stats.

That being said, I never said I had access to confidential admissions information. What I simply do have access to is numbers of GPA and test scores of average admissions stats that get accepted and denied from University Park from this year and last year.

And of course, Penn State has its own system to reevaluate GPA. Different colleges have their own systems, for example: some will look at weighted GPA, some will not. While others will only calculate GPA based on math/science courses etc, no gym courses, band courses etc etc. Penn State of course has to do this to keep and maintain a standard and fair student calculation into acceptance.

Cheers!
