So I’m a Canadian grade 11 (junior) student (international) looking at applying to UCLA and UC Berkeley this fall, and was wondering if I would have a chance (esp against all the in-states). My stats are as follows:
SAT I: (single sitting) 2200 (760m 740cr 700wr)
SAT II: math 800 physics 780
GPA/ranking : top 10% (out of 608 students) around 93% (no USA GPA system) sophomore/junior overall average
Taking IB for 4 courses (no HL scores)
ECs: -volunteering(120+ hours at various locations with city and volunteering organization)(working with zoo, science centre, elderly people, camp leader for children, hosting various activities, working at Salvation Army, working with homeless people, working with other cultures)(10-11)
-model UN(10-11)
-debate(10-11)
-starting a charity organization that raised over $10,000 for international charity (11)
-math club(10-11)
-speech club(10-11)
-anime club admin(highest title)(11)
-poetry club (competed in slam competition that our club won third place in city for)(11)
-entrepreneurship program(company Vice President of marketing) (11)
-dance class/team that won first place city competition(10-11)
-art class(10-11)
Awards/honours:
(Generally weak)
-dance team city wide award(10)
-poetry club city wide award(11)
-art contest city wide award(11)
-math contest national award top 25%(9,11)
-Chem contest top 10%national award(11)
-art contest national award (unknown contest/not prestigious)
please reply to this post it would help me a lot. Thanks so much
You have pretty good stats. For Internationals is obviously more difficult to get in but you have good scores. Can you afford those schools?
You have a very good chance of admittance. I disagree with @Jr12317 regarding difficulty of admission. Out-of-state admissions is sometimes easier, depending on the pool of applicants, than in-state. There is a set quota for OOS (with the tuition surcharge), and a set quota for in-state. You are compared to those in the pool. Sometimes in-state is more competitive.
Your application will certainly be competitive. Good luck!
Not sure if stats say the same. She said she is international which is different.

@Jr12317 I believe I can afford those schools no problem. I also believe I will be applying for College of Letters and Science for the computer science major(UC Berkeley) and computer science major at UCLA as well, fingers crossed for a good evaluation.
@treker205 then go for them. Best of luck with your app. I would like to know your GPA…?
I think it is not bad since from what you said, you seem a top student. Also you will be required to take the toefl.
4 IB subjects with no HLs?
I hope you’re taking the IB on top of other courses-a student taking only IB, but forgoing the traditional diploma programme (3 HL and 3 SL classes) or a more rigorous workload, won’t look good to unis.
@NotVerySmart I am taking the IB on top of regular courses, yes. I have also taken 1 college level course (without official transcript) along with an extra course in summer school
@NotVerySmart oh sorry I am actually taking 1 HL among my 4 IB courses XP, I just meant I don’t have official test scores for it yet.
you’ll get into likely either Berkeley or LA. Maybe both!
@ezraspineapple hoping that prediction will become reality! ^^
@Jr12317 my school doesn’t calculate GPAs in terms of the 4- ,5- or 6- (?) point scales, I only know my ranking and overall percentage student average
Yeah, I see. Probably they will do their own calculations.
As @Jr12317 shows in post #3, Internationals have a higher admit rate (by percentage-18% vs. 17%) than in-state at UCLA, and at Berkeley, the international admits have similar “Stats” --identical GPA, SAT, and ACT-- to in-state (though their admit rate percentage is lower). I think you have a very good chance. Take a look at the links in post #3.
