I am a physics major at a community college looking to transfer in the fall 2012 term to UC Berkeley or UC Santa Barbara. I have a 3.906 GPA, however 1 of my only two B's was in a non UC transferable course, so my UC GPA should be a little higher. I am also done with all my GE's. The thing that is going to hurt my chances is that I wont have all my major prerequisites done by the time of transfer. Ill still need to take electricity/magnetism, linear algebra/diff equations, and chem(although chem might not be a necessity id still like to learn it). Im pretty sure id be able to finish all these my first semester there though. Also I have a bit of extra curricular, but not that much.
So what are my chances? and more specifically how strict do you think Berkeley/Santa Barbara will be about finishing prereqs prior to transfer?

Ive also been looking into taking the classes I dont have during the summer prior to transfer. I live in santa cruz so preferably something near by. Anyone have any experience with doing this?

All the UC’s strongly emphasize that major pre-reqs be completed prior to transfer, ESPECIALLY CAL. The only exception is if they don’t offer the courses at your CC. Your GPA is great- keep it high and competitive! Without your pre-reqs completed (or at least a majority of them) though, your chances might be iffy.

not to hijack this thread or anything, but pre-reqs are the IGETC classes right? my major only has like 4 pre-reqs and only one is taught at my local community colleges. i will be done with all IGETC requirements.

i didn’t mention the fact that my school only offers one major pre-req. is this bad or what? do schools already know this?

^ Pre-reqs are required classes for your major, they can be part of IGETC but more often they aren’t. I’m in the same boat as you, I’m a Phil major and the 3 pre-reqs Berkeley asks for aren’t offered at my CC or any CC within a reasonable distance. I just put that in the additional comments on the Berkeley supp app and listed what Phil classes I have taken and might be able to petition for credit.

my transfer counselor said colleges dont care as long as you finish your IGETC. i didn’t mention in my TAU that my college only offers ONE class for my major. my major is not impacted and it’s not science/math/etc. will colleges notice that? i didnt mention this in my TAU update. i didn’t think i had to.

ARGH. Thoughts? Should I call UC? I imagine transfer decisions are already in-progress and it’s too late to change anything right? i can still access TAU of course but would it make a different to mention this?

^ What’s your major and what schools? If your CC doesn’t offer the pre-reqs then I’m sure the UC’s know that. And, I would disagree with your counselor, some majors prefer you focus on just pre-reqs and don’t even bother with IGETC (although those are mostly engi and science based ones). Your counselor might be talking about some majors that don’t have any pre-reqs, or those that have very few, where having your GE’s done become very attractive to the UC’s.

my major is middle east studies while my alternative is political science if i recall. not a hugely popular major at least according to Fall 2009 stats provided by UC.

I’d say im a borderline candidate since im still in the progress of completing my IGETC and I’m enrolled in more than 19 units to meet the 60 unit deadline.

should i call the school?

edit: oh, and that major only has 4 pre-reqs last I checked.
