Hi I’m a junior in High school now, it’s second semester I ended the first semester with a 3.5 weighted gpa and right now I have a 3.9 weighted gpa with 2 Aps I’m involved in 6 clubs I founded the Programming club and am president and as well as the president of Filipino club also Ive done 4 years of track (2 varsity letters) I’ve been in 6 clubs for four years and I’ve been in the California Scholrship Federation for 2 years and I’m taking the SAT in May and next October and also I’ve had over 150+ hours of community service i will be rewarded for my Invlivment int he community by my school and finally my essay which I have started and hope to edit through summer, I’m applying as an in-state.

, I was born and raised in the city of Stockton California ranked one of the most miserable cities in the world, stockton has had an increase in crime everywhere 2012 was the worse,I’ve had 3 friends killed from shootings and whenever I go to School which is a public school all I ever see is kids with no ambitions and only influences to drugs and violence only a minority of kids at my high school care for their future and that’s just me speaking the truth not many kids at my school care about life after high school so they try to ruin it for other kids by causing gang related violence and drugs, and fights with other teachers and students at school I just hope I can incorporate that in my essay so that the admission office could feel what I see and feel everyday and what I have to go through just to pull it together and try to make something out of my life I have a strong influence in Computer science and Ive made two apps and also have been seen on tv for creating the programming club I want them to see that CS is my passion

I think you have a solid chance at Santa Cruz, although its hard to say w/o your SAT/ACT. To have the best possible chance, try to aim for at least 1900, although 2000+ would be best, especially for a competitive and impacted major such as CS. Do you qualify ELC at your school?

Really inspiring to hear your story, and as petty as it sounds, take the time to really sell this in your UC and other essays.

Make sure you also apply to other UC’s & CSU’s, like Merced, Riverside, SJSU, SFSU, SDSU, CPP. Apply to most of the CSU’s if you can get them to waive your application fee. (No essays!) With a solid SAT you could start to think about privates like Santa Clara (which give financial aid and especially like students who thrive in tough environments).

I think you have a chance at many schools in California, namely Santa Cruz, but USC or Berkeley would be stretches, I think. You’ve gotta apply to see for real. I also want to see your PSAT for a better idea.

My SAT is a 1650 and I’m in the top 15% of my class rank with a class of 660 juniors

Honestly - SAT and GPA cut offs are not in your favor BUT if you are top 15% that does say something, especially because you get compared within your school. If you can make it up to top 10% or 5% and/or get a 2100 I think you have a solid chance! Your extra circulars are GOLD - make sure you highlight your many accomplishments!!!
