Chances of getting into University of Ottawa?

I’ve searched the internet, but cannot find any info on average sat/act at u of Ottawa. Does anyone know approx. what the average is?

My daughter is a HS sophomore interested in going to school in Canada. If, when she’s ready to apply, she has a 3.75 unweighted gpa with some AP classes, and she has an sat score of 1300-1350, what are her chances?

Your daughter should be in at the University of Ottawa.

I agree with bouders that your daughter should be admitted if she has those stats. I do have to ask, just out of curiosity, why she is interested in U of O? Relatively speaking, it has far fewer American students than other Canadian universities, e.g., U of T, Queen’s, McGill. Don’t get me wrong, I love Ottawa. It is an amazingly beautiful and vibrant city, with much to offer but I don’t recall many inquiries here on CC about it from Americans.

You should also look at the University of British Columbia. It is a big and vibrant campus, with excellent academics. It’s considered one of the three “Canadian Ivys.” The other two are McGill and University of Toronto. And as the poster above said, there is a wider mix of students from America and other countries.

Thank you for the responses. I found their requirements page, but it just says they need a HS diploma to apply.

We’re looking at u of Ottawa because McGill is looking a little out of reach and she doesn’t want to be too far from home (we live in NH). The top Canadian schools have seen a huge increase in applications from international students, so they can be more selective. Minimum sat at McGill for faculty of arts and science and above is 1410, 96th percentile. Maybe she’ll get there, but maybe not. Need a solid backup plan.

I made a list of schools within 6 hours of our home that would be <$45k and that have a world ranking (for what it’s worth) that is significantly higher than UNH. U of Ottawa has the best combo of price, ranking, appeal to our daughter, and certainty of acceptance. UMass Amherst and Stoney Brook are also on the list. Any other suggestions are welcome. We will not be eligible for financial aid, but maybe some merit scholarships.

Have you looked at Dalhousie or any of the small primarily undergraduate schools in Nova Scotia/New Brunswick? I know Mount Allison and Acadia are both very popular with American students. Not sure how high of a world ranking you are looking for but Dal as a mid-sized comprehensive university is ranked in the 251-300 range by THE and 244 by QS. Ottawa by comparison ranks 201-250 by THE and 289 by QS, so Dal is roughly equivalent. Maclean’s (Canadian ranking) ranks Dalhousie at 14 and Ottawa at 15 (out of 49) for all universities in Canada based on national reputation. Dalhousie has a higher average entering grade (88% vs 83.9%) though a much lower 7 year graduation rate (65.8% vs 77.5%) as compared to Ottawa. Cost for tution, books, incidentals, & residence is in the $30,000 range CAD, so well within your budget.

“she has a 3.75 unweighted gpa with some AP classes, and she has an sat score of 1300-1350,”

I think that your daughter’s chances at Ottawa are excellent. @gwnorth has suggested three other very good schools where your daughter again would have an excellent chance with her stats.
