USC and UCLA are my top two schools I want to go to, I'm looking to major in Film/TV Production. The only problem is that my SAT/ACT scores are kinda low and my GPA is only average.

SAT:
Reading 460
Math 540
Writing 430

ACT Composite 23

My standardized test scores are low; however, my essay was a tear jerker (proven by my superintendent).

Finally SOMEONE with similar stats with mine! I got a 1480 on my SAT (haven’t taken ACT), but I’m also applying to USC and UCLA, in the same major. Both schools are high reaches for you, especially since you are out of state. UC’s hold out of state students to MUCH higher standards. I’m not going to say don’t apply, but just know that there is a slim chance for you.
But like I tell everybody at my school, your SAT is just ONE part of your app. A LOT of people say that if your SAT is that low, that no UC will take you.
I disagree completely. Why would the UC’s put a minimum gpa of 3.0 if they were only going to accept people with high SAT scores?
All in all, the schools are high reaches, but you can still get in.
Your ec’s are good…
Gpa is good, kinda of low for UCLA and USC, but your EC’s might give u an edge.
Don’t get discouraged!
Hang on!

Good luck!

Beware: both are extremely competitive programs.

For example, UCLA will only be accepting about 30 people for its film program this year.

It can’t hurt to apply them, but I greatly urge you to look at other options, as well. The nearby CSU Northridge and CSU Long Beach have far less competitive, yet nonetheless very good quality, programs. I am also looking to study film, and I’m opening myself to as many options as possible.

Don’t forget to get started on your supplementary applications for UCLA and USC! Also, USC requires a portfolio.

P.S. It’s great to see fellow students aiming for the UCLA film school on here. With a lot of luck, we’ll all be seeing each other there next year.

Only 30 students?! That’s tough but it’s worth a shot. Without being able to choose an alternative major it’s hit or miss there.

Yeah, it’s a very competitive program. Definitely worth a shot, but still very difficult.

I really do recommend filling out apps for CSU Northridge and CSU Long Beach (Spielberg went there). The apps themselves are very easy (not even an essay), and both schools have decent, production-based programs. They make great backup, and are still near-ish to the LA area, which is excellent for any who wish to get in to the film business.

I also recommend doing extra research to find more schools! There’s a great subforum on here where plenty are listed: [Visual Arts and Film Majors - College Confidential](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visual-arts-film-majors/)

Try poking around, see what appeals to you!

I know it’s not, that’s what I’m worried about. Will I be able to take the ACT the first week of December and still be considered for scholarships if I send in the rest of my application before Dec. 1st? Also UCLA film doesn’t start until Junior year, would I just major in something else until then, implying that I do get in.

Ooh, sorry to burst your bubble, but UCLA has changed its system this year. The film program is now for all four years. It also requires a supplemental application, which is due December 5th.

I have no clue about the ACT.

Oh man, alright, I better get working on those extra essays then =/

Just curious, and not saying that this is a good idea or anything but would applying for a different major then switching be an option? Or is that just more work? Because I’m really looking to getting to UCLA just in general. Just wondering, not actually interested in taking that approach.

I thought the supplement application was due in January?

That’s only for transfer students

@eruditefire: For undergraduate applications, the deadline is the fifth of December. The supplemental materials must be postmarked by that date.

@Ninja4hire: It seems like a very plausible strategy to me. I believe it would be possible, perhaps even benefitial, as it provides more options if your interests change, and it allows you to build connections with professors before transferring in to the film program. However, your UC app would still need to be strong enough, which might be difficult.

Yeah, that ACT score is ruining me… When is the UC App due? Would they allow me to send my ACT scores later? I’m probably going to take the ACT on December 14th.

The UC app is due at the end of November, but it is best to finish earlier, as the website has been known to crash in the past.

I do not know about retaking the ACT, but you can try looking on the UC app website.

Idk, it says the first week of December but I’ve read on previous threads that they’ve taken scores later in December.

Well, just do your best on your applications, and find some excellent backup schools, in case you don’t get in to one of those highly competitive film programs. Its really all you can do at this point, at least for UCLA. USC has a little more wiggle room, time-wise, but you will need to have a portfolio to send them.

Um. From what you’ve said about yourself in the OP you’ve indicated absolutely nothing about your experience with film or production. I don’t know about UCLA, but for USC you need to have some sort of camera experience and good writing skills, otherwise you will be rejected. The supplement for USC is absolutely the most important part of your application.

From what you’ve said, it seems like they are both reaches and the film program is very competitive at USC particularly but like others said, it really depends on your supplements more for those majors so I can’t really say.

Chance me back?
