Hello, I'm considering applying to NYU, but I fear that I will not get any financial aid and be unable to afford to attend. I have a 33 ACT, 3.8 UW GPA, strong ECs, and very strong essays and (I assume recs). What kind of merit scholarships could I possibly get with these stats? I doubt that NYU would offer much in the way of need-based aid.

I think you definitely qualify for some kind of merit scholarships, but it’s hard to tell with NYU. Even if you don’t think NYU will give you any scholarships, go ahead and apply! You never know, and you don’t want to have any regrets later on about not having applied. You can always choose not to go if NYU does offer you a place, assuming you don’t do early decision.

Thanks for the reply. I only have two spots left on my Common App, so I’m trying to decide between NYU and a few other schools, but I feel like I’m gonna have regrets no matter what… If only there was some way to withdraw applications. And this financial aid uncertainty is problematic because there’s no way I can afford $60k a year.

Are you trying to decide which schools to apply Early Decision to? Most ED’s already passed; and obviously, you can only apply to one ED.

If you cannot afford NYU after you get in under ED, then you can withdraw your application.

I was not planning on doing ED, I was just wondering what I could expect in the way of merit scholarships.

@sgtdonut, you are in the best position to answer your own question. Only 1-2% of merit awards at NYU are entirely based on merit (and some of that could be artistic merit etc. not just academic). If when you did your expected family contribution calculation the result was an EFC that = the entire cost of attendance, then you will have to be lucky enough to be a part of that 1-2%. Your stats are excellent but not unusual for NYU. Perhaps if you have an additional hook beyond that it might help. Good luck!
