Currently a OOS junior who is hoping to get into the honors college. My UW gpa is less than a 3.5, but my test scores are good. I got a 34 on the ACT and my extracurriculars are above average. I’m interested in premed. How selective is the honors college and do i have a shot?
I did some superficial research on this some time ago, so don’t place too much weight on my thoughts.
I get the impression the honors college typically only accepts high stats kids who are are national merit finalist or semi-finalists. So you’ll probably need that piece of it along with the high act and also a much higher gpa.
@“General tso chicken” i am likely to be a semifinalist, and my course rigor is quite high(>10 AP courses). Is my GPA still not high enough?
You do have a shot. Your GPA is on the low side, so you should focus on decreasing the number of AP’s and doing better in the ones you do take. There’s no difference between 8 and 10 or 10+, provided your classes reflect careful choices. Your weighted GPA (where you get +.5 for honors and +1 for AP) should be clearly about 4.0.

MYOS1634 gives good advice.
@MYOS1634 @“General tso chicken” One more question, If I do better on the SAT should i send that or the ACT? Does ole miss only accept ACT for honors college admissions?(because all stats are written for ACT)

this video says “You must have a minimum of a 28 on the ACT and a non-weighted cumulative GPA of at least a 3.5.” Is this information correct?
Yes, you need to take fewer AP’s and bring your GPA up.
3.5 means as many A’s and B’s. For you, it means to get a lot more A’s.
Your test score is not a problem, don’t focus on that but rather on ways to improve your GPA.
What AP tests have you taken and what scores did you get? What’s your schedule for next year?
This Fall’s SMBHC class of freshman averaged 3.97 GPA and 31 ACT. Collegeinsider posted the number of applicants at some point, which was around 1400-1500 applicants with a little over 400 accepted iirc. Focus on your GPA as others have said. Good luck to you!
The SMBHC looks at applicants in a holistic manner. While the GPA may be an issue, it depends on where exactly it is. Is it close to a 3.5? Like a 3.3-3.4? If so, a strong resume, strong letters of recommendation and strong essays can overcome that especially if you can show that you have taken a rigorous load of courses. Letters of rec could explain your GPA. A personal visit to the SMBHC could also help. Being NMSF/NMF isn’t a requirement, but certainly helps. You can submit SAT scores as well! @lexington555
^I strongly recommend a visit where you email the Honors College ahead of time to have an “Honors tour” on top of your regular Ole Miss visit.
