Hi, I'm a senior from Louisiana applying from the top high school in the state.. I've heard so many great things about the Honors College at Ole Miss.. As of now, I am not sure where I wil be attending, but I plan to pursue a pre-med track. But i'm not exactly sure about getting into the Honors College

My stats:

GPA- 3.2
ACT- 30

Lots of work experience, community service, clubs and organizations.. EC's are overall pretty solid.. Just worried about those grades! Thank you all sooooo much for the help and making the college admissions process less stressful, because it's been veryyyy stressful thus far.

Is that your weighted GPA?

*Usually, a successful applicant will have a minimum ACT of 28 (or a 1240 on the math and critical reading portions of the SAT) and an unweighted high school GPA of 3.50, although meeting those criteria will not mean automatic acceptance. *

So, it looks like you need a 3.5 GPA.

Is your weighted GPA a 3.5?

How much will your parents pay for college? Will they pay for the out of state fees at Ole Miss? If not, where else will you be applying?

No, I take all basic classes… To be honest, i’m disgusted with my GPA. My freshman year and 1st semester of sophomore year I had a 3.8 until i started “having fun” and lost interest in school and what’s really important in life. Although, that phase I believe is past me, and for my senior year so far I have a 3.7, but the 3.2 is my total overall High School GPA.

And yes, I see it says 3.5, but hopefully that number can vary some with Jesuit’s academic reputation and such. I aven’t visited there yet, but from research it seems to be a great fit for me…

Yes, my parents can financial afford OOS at Ole Miss… I applied to LSU, Ole Miss, Alabama for safetys… Also Florida, Georgia, TCU for competitive… And Tulane/Miami for my reach to the stars… Financial situation is crucial though, since I hope to one day attend Med. School, I don’t want to be 100K in debt soooo young before Med School costs.

So honestly with my GPA and Standardized Scores, do I have a legitimate chance for the Honors College…? If I’m accepted into Honors, I’ll choose it wayyy over LSU and others!

I have to say it is really a long shot. M2CK asks if your weighted GPA is a 3.5, but the Ole Miss site clearly says the unweighted needs to be 3.5 or above, so I am not sure what difference it would have made if your weighted was 3.5. Anyway, given the 3.2 with no AP classes, I think you need to focus elsewhere.

You are wise to try and avoid debt if med school your goal. You definitely need to be sure those party days are behind you and that you are very focused. You clearly are not one of those people that can blow off studying and still ace a test. One thing you might look into is if you can get into the honors college if you prove yourself after a semester or a year. Barksdale is a great program. I know 2 kids there from our high school here in Rhode Island, and they really like it.
