What are my chances of going to a very good college? I am in 8th grade. I got a 2100 SAT (800 math, 680 reading, 620 writing). I'm expecting a 4.0 GPA (straight A's this year, and pretty sure I can manage the extra difficulty of high school classes). I am going to take honors/ AP courses next year mostly. For extracurricular things I will be getting a black belt in my martial arts program. I almost made it to math counts nationals this year (it is a hard state though). 5 on my AIME this year. I hope to qualify for USAJMO next year, and I think I will from my practice AIME tests. I took SAT 2 math 1&2 and physics practice test and got 800 on all three. I got 720 on chemistry SAT 2 practice test. I go to science club, programming club, robotics club, and math club. I participated in some science contests this year. I will be volunteering at a library next year. What else do I need to do to go to a good college (harvard, mit, princeton)?

Play a sport. Preferably for 3 or 4 years. In my opinion, for the clubs and ECs quality looks much better than quantity. So invest a lot of time into a few things you really care about. Don’t be “Mr. I can be president of every club”, because I have seen way too many of those in high school and they are only doing it to beef up their transcript.

Only 1 reply is disappointing…

Yo: You need to calm down a bit. If my eyes are not deceiving me, you are currently in 8th grade, correct? I think its great to be thinking about college now, but you should really try to find out what you really enjoy first before you worry about what you need to do for admissions to those schools. You are really young and still have lots to learn about yourself.

For example, it wasn’t until 10th grade that I realized how interested I was in business or service, and even longer before I decided to do a project that integrated the two. The project was driven mostly by my passion and was much less a factor of college admissions process (at the time I thought it wouldn’t be worth putting down on an application, rather something that I would do for myself)— that being said, the time commitment I put into it and the change inspired from all the effort I put into it really morphed it into a big EC for me, and something that many people are encouraging me to put on my application.

In short, spend a year maybe figuring out what makes you tick. When you are clear about that, follow whatever it is and really do something that makes you feel proud of yourself. You seem like a very smart, accomplished kid: I would imagine you have healthy high standards for yourself. Lead a group, change a community, inspire people, anything outside your comfort zone. Invest yourself in what you love. If you do have a passion already (I know many kids your age who do) you can gather your friends and start a club or organization in 9th grade. If you want any ideas, you can also pm or email me.

Good luck in high school!

First of all, don’t post things like this when you don’t have a solid resume. You’re ASSUMING you’re going to get a 4.0, you may, you may not. Anyone can say that “Oh, I’m gonna get a 4.0 for all 4 years of high school.” Once you’re a bit into high school and you have a good resume, then post something that we (CC’s members) can actually grade/judge your chances.

I see your point dlee96, but I am asking if I could get in, in a best case scenario.
