Chances of Transferring I'll chance you

Im from SJSU as a sophomore. Im undeclared and plan to change major to MIS. Im looking to transfer out to Emory, UIUC, William and Mary, and Purdue.
HS Stats:
GPA: 3.2
EC: XC, Track, Captain of XC and Track Team for 1.5 years, and 3 years in Interact Club (community service club)

SJSU stats:
current cumulative GPA: 3.47 (might either go up or down after this semester)
EC: NCAA Student Athlete (Fall 2012- present), SJSU Club track (spring 2012), Tutor at elementary school (spring 2012), held a job at the mathematics facility (Fall 2011).

I'm looking to compete my sport in college too.

My stats are ok, but I have a bad personal record, which i made some poor decisions, but benefited from them and i will i have mention in my apps. In high school i got suspended as a freshman, but thats many years ago. At sjsu, freshman year i got a warning for a alcohol incident and havent done anything after that. Then this semester I got caught cheating on a hw assignment. I should get a 0 on the assignment and a warning. I learned my lesson.

What are my chances????

bumpbumpbump

I’m not 100% sure how transfers work. That being said, if you have talked to the coaches at any if those schools and they really want you to compete on their teams, they could hold sway over the descion committee. From a stats perspective the most difficult school for you to get into will be Emory. Your academics put you in range for the other schools. If you can be recruited or very highly wanted for the track team, that would greatly boost your chances. Good luck!

Although I think that your slightly marred behavioral record might weaken your chances, I say that as long as you have a GPA above 3.0, you’ll be fine. You have leadership positions, and you’re an outstanding student athlete. But from your cheating, to your suspension, and to your alcoholic episode- this might blare a warning signal in the admissions committee’s eyes. Just as long as you show that you’ve changed, through EC’s or through your grades, make sure that you sound honest, not earnest. I think the worst thing than being a thief, is a liar. The same concept applies, in my opinion. Be honest and with high hopes, knock 'em off their feet with a beautifully written essay. Show everyone- teachers, parents, siblings. Everyone and get criticism. Do your best and your reward will eventually come.

Best of luck :)

So chance me for University of Maryland, College Park… :)

Thanks for the input. I contacted the schools and William and Mary and Purdue want to see my suspension, while Emory and Illinois doesnt. This suspension was in fact 6 years ago when i was a freshman, so I dont think it will affect my chances as much. The alcohol i think as long as what i say its all good after all i have changed alot. I have learned my lessons for all of them.

I think purdue yes, Illinois might be a reach since im going for business, William and Mary idk after this semester because its 3.5 but Track can help as long i hit standards. Emory… admissions said 3.3 and over.

Now the chance, you got good ECs, good resume. Idk what your GPA is, but i guess its personal. I think you have a good chance for Maryland if your GPA is good.

bumpppp bump bump

Oh haha, sorry I forgot to put my gpa. Lol, personal?
Unweighted gpa: 3.1
Weighted gpa: 3.6
I hate how its so low, but I have to be grateful compared to some others I know who are going to community college.

well idk when your semester is over. but if you are doing well right now, your chances can go up! Colleges don’t care about unweighted

Usually asking people for GPA is a taboo haha.

bummmppppp

i need more opinions please!!

I suggest an intensely amazing essay on “how you learned your lesson”, I have heard that colleges love when students write about how they have improved themselves because of revelations is a certain subject or area of interest. Talk about athletics and how it changed you as a person to make better choices. Your offenses are quite mild and I know people worse off that have gotten into Purdue for instance. Your GPA looks good for a on level transfer but if you are looking a college/university that is perhaps two tiers higher, you will need to pull your GPA up. The cumulative GPA looks good, but the current GPA needs to be pulled up. Also you may want to over sell yourself in terms of the “self-improved” portion of your story, so that there is no doubt that you are shiny new.

I agree with Ranjitm. I think colleges know that students (underage or not) are going to drink and experiment but I think they care most about how it effected you and if you’ve learned a lesson or going to make the same mistakes over and over. If I were in your shoes I’d write my personal statement about how you almost lost everything over a stupid mistake and what you have learned from it.

Thanks for the opinions. But now I’m in a dilemma.

Im thinking of dropping out of SJSU and hit up de anza for a year or maybe a semester and then transfer. The reason I’m thinking of it because Im struggling in CS courses and due to that I think what I did academically at high school didn’t prepare me for college and I think De Anza will help me.
I will still do sports and maybe I’ll work my best to get a full ride. Im thinking of major in business and minor in CS but my parents won’t accept that meaning ill have to pay my way and running will help me with that.
If I do go to De Anza, will the colleges still need to know what I did at SJSU in terms of my Personal Record?

bumpbumpbump

I need answers for my recent post please!
