Chances of transferring to GMU?

I have applied as a transfer applicant from Virginia Commonwealth University for the Fall 2013 semester for George Mason University. I am currently an Art Foundations major at VCU, but I am applying as a Communications major for GMU. I have a 3.76 as of my first semester, and have maintained those grades. The reason I'm worried is because of all the art courses I was required to take, I didn't have room in my schedule for a math course. On the GMU admissions page it says that "to be competitive", applicants should have taken a math and an english course. I have the english course, but not the math. Also, I don't think that every single one of my credits transfer over, so I probably have about 20-25 credits instead of 30.

I talked to admissions and they said that a decision has already been made on my application, and that I will be hearing back mid to late April. I'm assuming they made a decision before seeing my final grades, and based on the status completion (my transcript got lost in the mail at first), they made a decision within a day. Is this good or bad?
I asked if taking a math course over the summer would help my chances, but they were reluctant to give me an answer, saying that "at this point the decision can't be influenced." Waiting on the decision is practically killing me! VCU is not the school for me, and lots of things would come together for me at Mason. Do you guys think I have a chance? Thanks for the feedback!

Hi Nadia,

I think you do have a good chance based on your strong GPA. I’m sorry you have to wait on pins and needles so long! Too bad they couldn’t just tell you over the phone. Did you by any chance take any advanced math in high school that might help prove your skill in the subject? Or maybe if the math part of your SAT was good they might consider that. Good luck!

Hey Nadia
I’m also a transfer from VCU, I applied on the 13th of feb 2013 and literally got accepted on the 19th my application wasn’t complete till the 15th because of the transcript,I literally got accepted within six days. I currently have 48 credit hours and taking 12 this semester with a GPA of 3.4 if you round it. you have a great chance chance of getting accepted. let me know if you do.

@Nadia,
GMU does not require to your spring semester grades to make a decision on your application. If you are offered admission, it’s conditional and may be rescinded if your spring semester grades are poor. And unfortunately, stating your intentions to take summer courses will not influence the current strength of your application, at GMU or any other university.

@SFS Rules
are you sure about the spring semester grades? because the admissions has told me that they almost always ask all their transfers for the spring grades, obviously not every single one of them but a majority.

In a nut shell, conditional admissions decisions are made without your final spring grades. However, the spring grades will determine whether your conditional admissions is rescinded or not.

Spring grades aren’t released until 1-2 weeks after the school year ends. The vast majority of university’s will have notified transfer applicants of their admissions status before the end of the regular school year.

Every transfer student is offered a conditional admissions. It’s conditional upon the spring grades. The new school will request for final spring grades, but it’s after a conditional offer has already been made.

If you’re spring grades are poor, the university can then rescind your offer. If you’re grades are “strong”, your admission stands. That’s why it’s important to maintain good grades for the spring semester.

^
But, if you’re referring to the final fall grades, then yes, they are required before a decision can be made on your application.

Hi all- thanks for responding! I’m happy to announce that I was notified on April 4th that I was accepted into GMU. I’m excited to be attending as a Fall 2013 applicant!

yayy congrats nadiasimoneb!

Congrats, Nadia!
