I’m interested in transferring to NYU for fall 2020 as a journalism major. What do you think my chances are of getting accepted? Answers would be greatly appreciated!
Here are my stats:
Out of state student - California
First generation college student
Latina/Female
GPA: 3.0
ExtraC: -Staff writer for the school newspaper
-Commissioner to the director of publicity at CC
- 3-4 letters of recommendation (1 professional from work, 2 academics from
professors, 1 personal from counselor)
- Will take my time with personal essay to make it stellar.
I understand that my GPA isn’t high. But, do you think that with letters of recommendation, well written essay, and extracurriculars can help better my chances?
@nizmar426 - on first glance I would say your chances are slim. Community colleges are great places to start but in order to transfer to a more selective institution you should get good grades in your cc courses. How many semesters have you attended your cc? Can you do substantially better this semester and will it pull your GPA up? What was your high school GPA?
NYU accepts about 1 in 4 transfer applicants. I am sure they consider LOR and essays but there’s always a basic question of whether the student is a fit academically.
Transfer applicants need to submit both their high school transcript and their college transcripts so they do care about grades. Unless you were an amazing student in high school and you have some explanation for your current less-than-stellar GPA and you can show this year that you can do much better… I think you’d be better off aiming for a less selective school.
@CaMom13 Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, I’ll be at 72 units by the end of this term. I talked to my counselor and he said that most universities don’t really like when a student exceeds 84 units at a CC…
Had some health issues that affected my GPA. But, judging from my transcript, you can see the improvement after seeking help from my doctor. (He even wrote me a letter of recommendation to vouch for my improvement)
Was thinking of adding a brief explanation as to how that affected my GPA on my personal essay.
