D will be going to CAS as a freshman this year, and wants to major in English (with creative writing minor) but is quite keen on doing a minor/double major in animation. Tisch wont let non-Film Tisch students minor in Producing, and so she is thinking about transferring to Tisch at the end of freshman year so she can do a major in animation as well as a double major in English in CAS. (Tisch students are allowed to double major in several CAS subjects, but not vice versa)

Does anyone have any experience of how easy or difficult it is to do an internal transfer from CAS to Tisch Film&TV after the freshman year?

Also, is a Film major with focus on animation popular in Tisch and difficult to get into?

SingaporeDon,

Here is a recent post from someone who was successful in transferring from LSP to Tisch Film. I would say it is still a very competitive process given the smaller numbers accepted into this school. However, obviously, this has happened and will depend on the student’s potential and talent in the field, as well as record at CAS (maybe some HS records since it is transfer after the first year).

Here is the recent thread about this:

Perhaps you can contact the last poster in this thread for more info about the transfer process.

I have no idea about your second question re: animation studies at Tisch.

Hi SingaporeDon,
I am a freshman in Steinhardt for English Education but will be transferring to Tisch for Film & Television next year, with hopes of focusing on animation too :]
I heard it is supposed to be competitive, but nevermind that; application-wise, it is really easy to apply (you fill out an online application to NYU Undergrad Admissions and then you drop off your portfolio separately to Tisch).
The animation program is really great at Tisch and a lot of kids end up taking several animation courses even if they don’t plan to pursue a career in animation; I’m not completely sure, but I was told there’s only a reasonable handful of kids who are purely/seriously study animation. You don’t “get into” anything; once you are a film major, you can take any courses to fulfill the Film & TV credits required for graduating. Also, double-majoring is really great at Tisch, since you have a lot of general education requirements to fulfill.
Let me know if you have any more questions and good luck to your daughter!

Also, in regards to evolving’s post, they don’t look at your high school records. The online application is a breeze; it just asks for your student info and asks a few short essay questions; they pull up your academic profile independently. And Tisch only looks at your portfolio; if they accept you, they let undergraduate admissions know. Both departments must accept you.
My friend in Film & Television told me her professors were turning down many internal transfer applications, but I’ve heard pretty good news so far about accepted applicants! Anyways, sorry I’m no expert, but I hope I helped! Feel free to PM me
