Chances of UF? dream school :(

Little bit about me:
Parents were born and raised in Korea, came to the US with no money and ownership, built up to the high grounds of middle class.
I am a Korean-American male and was born and raised in northern Florida, first generation of college, parents never went to college.

Going into senior year

Academics:
Have always taken the absolute most rigorous classes school had to offer.

My school offers a program called the Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education, requires completion of 7 AICE classes to earn a “Cambridge Diploma”, which I will most likely be receiving. These classes are weighted like AP classes. (not sure if this program is of any significance to the UF admissions office)

My rank is around 3-4%, 25/660
Unweighted GPA: 3.4
Weighted GPA ( according to school scale): 4.9
UF GPA ~ 4.0-4.1

of APs taken from Freshman year to Junior year: 6

scores for those as: AP Human Geography 4, AP World History 3, AP Psychology 4, AP Chemistry 3, AP Calculus BC 2, AP Macroeconomics 2.

of AP's I'm planning to take in Senior year( not sure if this matters) : 4

AP English Literature, AP Microeconomics, AP Statistics, AP Government

SAT: 1500 (800 M, 700 R)
ACT: not taken

AP Scholar Award(not sure if it means much)

Extracurricular Activities:
Started a gaming club in my school with a friend, am the Vice President.
250+ volunteer hours.
Tutored young kids how to play chess at a local youth center.
In math honors society club at my school.

Your resume looks amazing, even better than mine! Bear in mind, UF admissions was practically a lottery this past year in terms of acceptance. The statistic was something like 1 in 4 people getting accepted, and I have the pleasure of knowing someone with a 950 on their SAT getting in while someone with a 1500 failed to get in! Your resume looks amazing, and don’t be afraid to apply to other colleges as well. A student at my school got turned down by UF but got a full ride to Harvard. Do yourself a favor and don’t stress yourself out by thinking that your only option in Florida is UF.

I agree. You have a good chance, but also apply to FSU and UCF and South Florida. Talk up the EC’s on your application as UF likes them.

Thanks so much! I will definitely be applying to a majority of the state schools here in Florida, I plan to stay in Florida because of the increased budget for the Bright Future’s Scholarship, which is basically free undergrad  I was worried because of my GPA, ranking on the low side for the average. I’m hoping to get into UF because the student life and atmosphere there seems to fit me perfectly.

At this point, BF is only increased for this coming year. It isn’t a permanent increase. However, Florida’s low tuition with BF is a very good deal.

@fqaziDP Harvard doesn’t give full-ride scholarships. Do you mean they got financial aid from Harvard?

Also, the person who claimed to have a 950 on his SAT is clearly lying. To APPLY the person needs to have at least a 1000 SAT and 19 ACT, otherwise the application will get auto rejected. Even if his SAT score was really low, the only time they give admissions to people with the lowest score possible is probably through sports scholarships or other special circumstances.

I have no doubt that UF was random, but I take what people say with a grain of salt since they might lie to look cool.

Guys, this UF is random talk needs to stop. It’s just like any school. If you fit within the middle 50% (that’s what I consider a match), then it will be random… this goes for any school. If you are above the middle 50%, it gets far less “random”.

I highly doubt someone got into Harvard and not UF. I would not believe that OP if I were you.
Your SAT is on the very high side while your ECs and GPA are on the lower side. You took hard classes; you seemed to show mastery of the classes via most of the AP exams. I’d consider UF a match, so again, for you, you can’t know if you will get in or not.

Let me say, if your GPA matched your SAT score, it would not be random in any way for you.
UF’s 2017 acceptance rate was 38%. Not random. That is a relatively high number for such a great school.

If I were you, I’d find a couple of florida schools that would be more “safeties” just in case. (You could get scholarships from such schools as well)

@AimingTop50 Thank you for your insight! I will be applying to a majority of the major Florida universities.

@ilovehanzo You’re welcome. I’m going through the process right now as well, it can be stressful. Your parents worked very hard to lift you up through the ranks, which is amazing. You will succeed at any Florida school.
