Chances of University of Illinois / Wisconsin-Madison

Pursuing a major in Computer Science, so at University of Illinois I suppose I would be competing to get into the Engineering school.

Currently attending the #1 public high school in Illinois

ACT: currently 33 (still waiting on April ACT score, probably got higher than a 33 on it).

GPA: 3.43 u/w 3.62 w

AP/Honors classes: AP Physics C, AP Calc AB, AP Comp sci (AP Test: 5), Honors Biology, Honors Chemistry, Honors Physics.

ECs: (Will also be in Earthworks, Investment Club, and Cross Country in my senior year).
Earthworks: 3 years (Leader)
Investment Club: 2 years
Swim Guard (teaching kids swim lessons): 2 years
Cross Country: 2 years
Gymnastics: 1 year

School does not have class ranks.

My grades are nothing phenomenal (although I attend a rigorous school with a dropout rate of 0.2%), nor are my extracurriculars, but I have a pretty good ACT, and I am probably going to get a 5 on the AP Physics C and AP Calc AB tests, since I have done extremely well on practice tests. I will also have taken 3 years of AP Computer Science by the time I graduate (though only one officially counts towards college credit, it will effectively show up as an individual study of the college computer science curriculum).

I know that UofI Engineering is a very competitive and selective school, so I am a little worried about getting in. If it matters, I live in Illinois and therefore am in state. Also if anyone feels generous feel free to chance me for University of Wisconsin.

Your GPA is a little bit low as you said. But if that is typical for your high school, that should be fine. You should have a high chance for UIUC as in state. If you are accepted by UW Madison, check out the mid-west exchange program that can cut down your oos tuition. By the way, you should be able to check your April ACT score online with some trick now. Check out the ACT prep forum.

UIUC should not be difficult. UWisconsin might be a high match, maybe a match though.

I was under the impression that UIUC would be harder to get into than Wisconsin since as a computer science major I would have to apply to the engineering school at UIUC but at Wisconsin I would not be at the engineering school. Also, Wisconsin is ranked worse than UIUC in computer science.

City life vs. classic best college town in mid west besides Ann Arbor. All about preference

These 2 schools are on my DD’s list too, so I have compared them thoroughly. In general, UW has slightly higher average GPA and test scores than UIUC for admission. Considering the engineering program in UIUC, it should have comparable admission stat as UW. Your ACT score is clearly about their admission average (30-31), but your GPA is far below. For instance, UW has an average admission GPA of 3.77 and only 18% of admitted students has GPA below 3.5. But again, if that is due to your school’s grading system, it will be fine.
