Does WashU actually reject people or do they just waitlist everyone../.

How many applicants were rejected in previous years?

some people did get rejected...but more seem to get waitlisted...at least on cc

washu does say somewhere how many people are accepted, but that doesnt help since the number of people that were rejected includes the number that were waitlisted and never got a call....plus there is no common data set for washu

I know how you all feel now! I just got waitlisted at UChicago (and deferred prior to that!!)

From my hs school 9 people applied to WashU. Only my friend/roommate and I got in (we're engineers), the other 7 got waitlisted (all artsci) and the one person who stayed on the waitlist go in off of it.

I have to agree with WUSTL and their waitlisting overqualified candidates because of matriculation percentages. I got waitlisted with a 36 average ACT and I'm valedictorian at a nationally ranked hs. And I'm a girl wanting to do engineering, go figure. I thought they wanted people like me.... It was kind of my safety though....I'm not that disappointed.

I wonder how many people that apply to WUSTL apply to UIUC as well?

Does anyone have any insight on the qualifications required by WashU? My S has a 35 ACT, 2260 SAT with a perfect score on the math portion, has won numerous awards and honors in the academic areas and was waitlisted. This is very discouraging because we have always emphasized that strong academics will get you places. I know of two students who have been accepted with lower scores in other areas of study within WashU. Is the chance of being accepted into the Med school lower than being accepted into one of the other areas?

WashU admissions is crazy. period. no one can figure out why certain people get certain admissions decisions. you can take a look at the "washu admittance hardness" thread and you'll find that your son is in good company despite his stellar qualifications.

shibbyrae7,

I agree your situation is a good example of how Wash U manages its admissions. But which do you think is the real reason for the waitlist? Is it because you are "overqualified," or because "It was kind of my safety though....I'm not that disappointed."

Obviously they would love to have a student of your caliber, but they couldn't. Somehow, they could tell.

Since WashU doesn't give out stats on admissions - can anyone tell me if they personally have been waitlisted and then actually got in? How frequently does this happen?

My son is a National Merit Scholar Finalist has a 34 ACT, a 2320 SAT and was waitlisted also. He took Wash U off his list.

Reading all these posts, it seems lucky that I got on the WU wait list at all. My SAT scores are scarcely over 2000. But then, maybe it was my extracurricular activities that got me in the wait list.

Wow, why would you bump a 3-year old thread when there are SO MANY NEW THREADS that are EXACTLY like this one???

I don’t usually check dates. My bad -.-

^HOW DARE YOU accidentally forget to check dates.

I was waitlisted also. If I were more keen on WUSTL I’d probably be more disappointed, but at least it’s not a complete rejection. It was sort of weird, because a lot of my friends (all of us have high GPA’s and pretty high SAT scores) were waitlisted, and about 3-4 got in. I seriously do not know how this process works. If it’s true that WUSTL waitlists many qualified applicants, then I guess I can take some solace in that…
