Chances on University of Texas, Austin

So I’m looking to apply to University of Texas, Austin. Im actually looking to transfer. I have a total of 46 credits from 2 different colleges. My biggest hurtle is that the first 2 year of college didn’t go so well. I have a total GPA of 2.6. I went back a semester last year and brought my GPA up from a 2.4 to a 2.6. Im 23 and have been off and on with my college since graduating high school in 2012. I recently moved to Texas from Florida which is why I just left my last college. I have some friends that want to move to austin to go to school at University of Texas, Austin, but I’m not all to optimistic about getting in. Plus i want to wait a year to become a Texas resident before taking classes. I would want to get into their Fine arts college for bachelor of Science AET degree. What are my chances? I would apply, but i don’t plan on returning to school for another year. I don’t want to move believing ill be accepted, should i apply right now?

University of Texas at Austin has a transfer acceptance rate of 45%, so I’d say its only slightly competitive. The average GPA of students who transfer to UT Austin is 3.48, and yours is well below that. Considering your circumstances, I’d say it’s a long reach. Having 46 credits means you’re a sophomore when you should have already graduated; however, UT at Austin requires transfers to have at least 30 credits and you do meet that requirement so you’re good in that aspect.

Also, if you do decide to apply, you should wait to become a Texas resident. On their website, they say that 44% of accepted transfer students on 2016 were residents of Texas, and only 22% of the accepted were out-of-state applicants, so you’d have a better chance in my opinion.

One of the requirements for the College of Fine arts is to submit a portfolio. You should try and focus on that and make it very strong and impressive, since your grades will most likely lessen your chance of getting in: “All applicants considering a major in the College of Fine Arts should begin cultivating samples of their artistic work in preparation for a required audition or submission of a portfolio.”

Good luck! Lux Sit

Thank you! I may look into University of Arlington since they have a higher acceptance rate or a community college to bring up my GPA then transfer

I went to UT Arlington my freshman year! If you’re looking for a school with a sense of community, I would not recommend it. It is a huge commuter school so unless you join greek life or a club on campus then it is extremely hard to meet people

You must spend two years at UT austin in order to receive a degree from there. You’re already borderline. With 46 hours under your belt, switching to UT Arlington then to UT Austin would be impossible if you take 15 hours at Arlington.

UTD is the next best college in the University of Texas System. Below is the requirement for auto transfer. Bring your GPA to a 2.7 and you’re in!

@Jpgranier UTD is not the next best college in the University of Texas System. They are the next highly ranked university but rankings are quite subjective.

I’ve heard many good things about UT-Dallas and UT-Arlington. I know of people who transferred from UT-Dallas to UT-Arlington and not b/c the academics was too hard … so it really depends. There are multiple good options in the UT System that offer different things, no one school is perfect for every type of ambitious student.

@Jpgranier Does this rule apply for OOS community college students as well and if yes then for Jindal school of management too and how good is that business school just in case this rule applies for OOS students.?
