It depends Maguo. 10 years ago, a student with a 3.6 GPA and a 1300 SAT score was virtually guaranteed admission into Michigan. Today, such a student would most likely be turned down. If last year's leap in selectivity (SAT mean jumping from 1330-138 and acceptance rate dropping from 57% to 47%) at Michigan was the start of a trend and not just a one-off, it is not inconceivable that a student with RenMan's credentials could be turned down. I agree that all things considered, RenMan has a good chance of getting in, but one never knows. What if Michigan's applicant pool swelled by another 15% this year, to reach 30,000? And what if Michigan's mean SAT increased by another 50 points. That would pretty much mean that Michigan would have a mean SAT score of 1430 and an acceptance rate of 40%. I realize, such a leap is unlikely, but it did happen last year. Once thing is certain...I would never recommend Michigan as a true safety.

one thing i should add is that im putting hebrew and judaic studies as intended major, and i have taken classes and EC's that back it up, so would that unusual major help?

I don't think so RenMan. I don't think Michigan pays particularly close attention to intended major. You will probably be handled like any other LSA applicant.

if they didnt pay attention why would they ask you to write a short essay on why you chose that major?

5 bucks says he'll get rejected.

They use that to help with your orientation assuming you are admitted. Your file will go to your advisor and any information will help the advisor prepare for you. Besides, it's not like the University doesn't care. It obviously wants to know about the applicant, but choice of major does not usually alter one's chances since many students change concentrations during their Freshman.Sophomore years.

are you bound to the major you put down?

not at all, you're just bound to the school you apply to, but even then you can cross campus transfer...

thanks to all of you who have posted helpful replies

UM is a state school and a lot of admissions is based on numbers. If your SAT and GPA arent competitive (and you arent going to be starting for the football team) then you will probably be rejected. But you do have the numbers so unless you did something illegal or you praise Ohio State in your essays, you should get in. The only way you will not get in is if you send in your app on the deadline because most spots are taken. Also, UM doenst care what your major is beause most people in LSA change their majors atleast once (fewer people change in the other schools tho).
