I would say so, but I can't really say for sure since I don't know too too much about BioE admissions. Although, it should make you feel better that my roommate got into BioE and he did significantly worse than you in SATs, SAT IIs and APs... His GPA was probably worse than yours too... But maybe someone else can shine more light on BioE admissions...

I never said he can't get in. I said it's very difficult to get in as a "bioE" major. Doesn't necessarily mean he won't get in, just maybe not as a bioE major after the "whole process."

My understanding was that if you declare an impacted major and they don't see you fit, they reject you altogether. I guess that's not the case.

chemical_relapse, unless you changed your position in like 3 hours, you totally contradicted yourself...

well anyways, it's would only be better (i think) to declare bioe if you even are only halfway considering it. because you can always switch out and you can't ever switch in. and since it doesn't affect whether you get in or not, there's no disadvantage to doing it.

as a side note to everyone, if you understand the admissions process at ucsd, you couldn't possibly think major determines your acceptance; they add up your points and determine a cutoff point, and your major has no contribution to the point system

I think the major doesn't count, becuase you can go in undecided, and then choose a major. I don't really think is a problem. Anyhow....chemical_relapse you wrong about the essays....cuz actually the essay can be for anything for them to know anything. It can be for those who **** up in school, but in that essay may write the reason for this....as i did....which proves my point cuz im proof. LOl and yea they do at other things....they probably thing Im going to cheer at there school, however i don;t think I am. Essays help in every area....im not the only one that says this...ask anyone who really knows.....and no, i didn't have any hook ups. Im bless i guess, it was a blessing from GOD.....Prayers were my hook ups, lol....

Woops, looks like I contradicted myself there. Nice one cr.

Rudymentary:
I don't even know where to begin with you. I've looked through this thread up and down twice and I do not see myself mentioning anything about the essay portion of the application. And btw, speculation has it that UCSD only briefly glimpses through your essays to see how many points to award you for this and that... They don't give ass about how well you wrote it. So you may think your proof but trust me in reality, UCSD just looked at the hardships you had to overcome and put a number on it. AND, you got me mixed up with cr_book about the whole "essay" thing but cr is right so it doesn't even matter.

Uh yeah... Your essay could have been written by a 9 year old and you could have gotten bunches of points as long as it discussed some horrible experience/hardship you had to go through...

chem_relapse and beware0fnerd are right about this one rudymentary

and i don't think you should be throwing out God's name like that

I'm sure people will take their essays seriously and try to pull off damn good ones since UCSD isn't the only school they want to get into. UCLA and Cal for example place more emphasis on the essay because of their "holistic" approach. I am not an expert on UCSD's admissions process, heck I don't even know if that's how it works but I've heard it enough times and it seems like that's the general belief (putting numbers into everything). I think what UCSD does is actually smart since thousands of students pay some Harvard graduate to write their essays for them. You don't know if these people wrote these statements themselves or not. Although I'm not a big fan of the point system, I like how UCSD devalues the essays.

the only drawback is your gpa.
