Chances Please. Thoughts Greatly Appreciated

I was originally going to post this next fall, but I realized many of the people on this forum might leave by then so I am posting this now.

I would be grateful if anyone could evaluate my chances :)

HIGH SCHOOL
3.7x overall GPA
SAT: 1350 (retaking)
SAT II: 590W (retaking), 790MIIC, 640 US H
ECS: Multiple leadership positions, volunteering, Honor Society/CSF
Honors/Awards: Many but mostly from FBLA, some from other organizations

COLLEGE (all units are quarter units)
3.81 overall GPA (30 units completed)
Current School: UC Davis
Honors/Awards:
Dean Honor Roll both completed quarters
First Year Scholar
ECs:

Currently Working On/Almost Completed With:
Met and is helping candidate run for state office
Honors Challenge
Intramural Sport (Frisbee!)
Religious Club
Mentor at Highschool

About to Start On:
Study Abroad this Summer in China
Personal project to educate people in China (kinda vague, I know)
Internship at 2nd largest law firm in China, following the above two.

Hopefully can get job on Campus during fall

Community College (taken during HS)
3.8 gpa (22.5 quarter units)

Have Completed the Normal Prereqs for transferring Business:
MicroEcon, MacroEcon, Financial Accting, Managerial Accting, Statistics (though not Business-specific), Calculus(1/3 complete), and 1yr of Foreign Language

Other notes:
My Fall gpa was 3.91 w/ 13 graded quarter units + 1 P/NP

My Winter gpa was 3.71 w/14 graded quarter units + 1P/NP
Brief Story: Fell off of bicycle, messed up arms, couldn't write for 2 weeks (out of the 10 week quarter) and right in the beginning of midterms, which killed my Accelerated Chinese grade (B+). I have a funny picture of me with both arms in casts up to my shoulders.

Currently, I have 95%+ in all of my classes (15 units) and I believe that I will be able to earn a 4.0 or 3.9 this Spring Quarter.

I also believe that I will be able to earn a 3.9/4.0 studying abroad (15 units)

So I should have a 3.9 or high 3.8x's by the time summer ends, and possible 3.9x by the time I apply.

Currently Thinking of Applying To:

NYU Stern (Finance), Michigan (2yr BBA), UNNC (Finance), Cal (Haas or Econ), Cornell (AEM or Econ), Virginia (Finance), Northwestern (Economics), Chicago (Economics)

What are your thoughts?

Which schools are a match? Which schools are a reach?

How do you DO something like that?! I'd love to do that but I wouldn't even know where to BEGIN!

well, you're definitely not getting into michigan cuz this year was the last year for the ross 2 year bba. you wrote UNNC, but i'm assuming you meant UNC, and i'm pretty sure you'll get into UNC and Stern. I'd say you have a pretty good shot at Chicago and Northwestern, but I doubt you'll get into Cornell and Cal.

I forgot to mention my reason for transferring:

In 9th grade, my family went through a lot. My father was arrested for theft of trade secrets and a few other felones, but they were reduced to one misdemeanor and ultimately he was found not guilty at trial. My gpa that year was 3.1 and 3.5 unweighted. We later sued, and settled out of court.
My father now works in China, so it is only me and my mom and little brother at home, and my little brother was still 12 when I was accepted into colleges as a freshman, so I chose to go to UC Davis to stay close to my family and help out (I am originally from Davis). I had been accepted into UCSD and NYU CAS as a freshman as well. Now my brother is 13, and will be 14 by the time I transfer, and my mom feels like they will be ok without me, so that is my reason for not going elsewhere.
Additionally, I feel that the economics program here is too theoretical, the managerial economics program is a hybrid of the economics major and accounting (also very theoretical). The Agriculture Resource Economics is about farming/agriculture, which is very hands-on and reality-based but I cannot see myself studying agricultural economics and applying it later in my career.

Forgiven, are you sure that Ross is no longer doing the 2-year BBA? their website still shows information for applying sophomores...

http://www.bus.umich.edu/Admissions/BBA/Prospective/Program/HowToApply.htm#TS-Sophomores

thx forgiven

Bump

no problemmo. and you don't want to apply to ross anyway. like 97% of ross students are originally from umich, so they only get like 15-20 external transfers a year.. haha. i don't plan on getting accepted :]

oh wait.. are you a california resident? if so.. i'd say you have a better shot at cal. i'm out of state, so i didn't even bother applying to cal, hehe.

yea, I'm in state. I'm at UC Davis, so it will be a UC-intercampus transfer for LA and Cal. thx again forgiven!

if you don't like theoretical economics, don't go to Northwestern.

if you get into unc you won't go directly into kenan flagler....you have to spend at least a semester at the college of arts and sciences before you can apply, and once you do I think only 10-18% can be out of state students....i think you have a good shot at the other schools though. chicago and cornell are a little quirky with their admissions though so nothing is a sure bet. Cal should be easy since you are in Cali.

darn, I guess I will not be applying to UNC. Definately good to know that before applying, thx gonsenheim

kattal, is there a way to tell which schools have a theoretical/applied economics program?

I'm not sure if there's any way to know for sure, but things like whether they offer a business degree or any sort of business-y major (accounting, finance, etc) is probably going to make it more applied b/c they'll require you to take some of those classes.

As for Northwestern, there's no acccounting major, no finance/accounting classes and the way the classes I've taken are taught and having talked to upper level students, there's not much applied AT ALL.

Thanks kattal, thats interesting. Hmm, I will definately have to reconsider applying to Northwestern.

It depends on how much you want this so-called "applied" economics, which doesn't even really exist. But I would urge you to consider Northwestern anyway. It's really a wonderful school and has a more than decent econ department.

What I really want is somewhere that has economics that is particulary good and I could get opportunities for business. Here at UC Davis, I have gone to two of the major Career Day recruiting fairs and there were only about 4 companies out of 50+ hiring econ-related majors. Mostly were either wineries, engineering, or medical companies. Also, out of the 4 companies (Well Fargo, First Northern Bank, and two insurance companies) none of them would hire freshman or sophomores. Even though by the time I transfer, I will be a junior, I would like more options than just 4 companies that come to my college. I also did a search through the Internship and Career Center at UCDavis and there are very few internship/networking opportunities available for economics/business.

thankyou for the encouargement kattal! I will apply to NU next year :)
