SAT: 1270/1600, 1870/2400
GPA: 3.3 (Worst part of my app, took some tough classes/very competitive. Also have some extenuating circumstances that have affected my grades)

Took only one AP but tons of honors/accelerated courses, over 50 hours of community service, including going to New Orleans for a few days as part of the General Assembly and helped out in the 9th ward, worked with special needs children, habitat for humanity, Varsity Basketball, Baseball, and Bowling, even interned for my townships engineering department this past summer (looking for major in engineering). I am enrolled at a dual curriculum school with both secular and judaic studies (don’t get out of school till 5:07 every day). I am also an Out of State applicant.

I think that’s everything, thanks in advance!!

Your GPA may hurt you but your SAT score isn’t bad at all. I also feel that they’ll take into consideration the type of school you go to and its difficulty. Also, the EC’s and volunteer work will definitely work in your favor. good luck and post if you get in!

You should be eligible for the National Buckeye Scholarship ($8700/year) with your score but it depends on class rank as well (top 40%is required-I’m not sure how competitive your school is so I don’t want to assume anything). In addition, if you are in the top 20% I believe you have a chance to get a Trustees scholarship which is another $1200/year. However, I am not sure if any of these are automatic or not since they say “competitive” in the description. Good luck to you!

My daughter goes to a school that doesn’t rank either and OSU said not to worry because they do take that into consideration. I believe they look at several factors and figure out a ranking for you. I’m not sure what they look at but I would assume gpa, competitiveness of your high school, difficulty of course work, and maybe your ACT or SAT scores. In addition, you many want to also talk to your guidance counselor. At our high school they don’t officially rank but they can get you a ranking if that makes sense. My daughter knows what her rank would be IF our school officially ranked. Students can sign a release if they want it released to a university. Your school may offer this and it may be to your advantage when looking for scholarship money. So, talk to your counselor and ask if they can give you a ranking and if it is to your advantage then get that ranking to OSU somehow.

If I were you, the only thing I would be concerned about your gpa. Is that weighted or unweighted? You mentioned taking 1 AP and several honors. Does your school weight for both honors and AP? Do you show an upward trend? That can be helpful as well.

Also, there are a lot of other scholarships you can apply for. OSU has a bunch you can search through. In addition, if you are near a bigger city with an alumni group, you can apply for one of their scholarships. I don’t think it is a lot of money but anything helps.

To be totally honest I am unsure if it is weighted or not b/c my transcript only has 1 gpa. If I have like a B through B+ in all honors courses what would that usually translate to on a weighted scale?

You’re more than in. It would be a stretch for you to get the out of state scholarship, but you are technically eligible for it (which should indicate that you’re easily in). Ohio State has been working hard to increase their academic reputation and are accepting a large amount of out of state students with good applications, which is good for us out of state people :).

Good luck on getting in! Let us know what happens.

anyone think i’ll get in ?? visited last august- really loved the school. have a 3.0/3.25 and a 1300 M&V 1970 overall. worried my gpa isn’t high enough- science classes really lowered my grades- applied as a french major if it matters.
