Thank you!

What major are you applying for?

Most likely Biology (Pre-Med). My second choice is Accounting/Finance.

Im in state, had a 3.37 gpa unweighted, 3.95 weighted, 2 APs, two sports, about 50 hours of volunteer hours, and pretty good essay and i got in, i applied early though. You should get in.

Did you apply regular or early decision? I was deferred in December. I heard, indirectly, that if you didn’t have a 4.4 GPA and at least 1700 SAT you were automatically deferred. They deferred more people this year than they ever have.

Hey,
I applied to the Dec 1 early action and I also got deferred.
Do you know what the chances of me getting in as an out of state applicant?

The EA deadline was October 15. I’m not sure. But, last year only 16% of those deferred were later accepted.
Good Luck.

Looking through your credentials I do not see how you were deferred. The only thing stopping you may be your pretty low gpa. I see it as, if you improved last semester with exceptional grades, then you have a higher chance getting in even with your deferral. Your EC’s seem pretty good for NC State standards, but they emphasize mostly on gpa and SAT/ACT scores.

It may also be because you applied as a Biology major. @ NC State, they take into consideration of your major. Biology seems like a pretty popular major and you probably didn’t stand out with your competition.

And @Cookietray, I applied on the Oct. 15 early action deadline. I do not think there is an early action for Dec. 1. I believe there is one for Nov. 1 or 15th, but not as far as December.

I got into NC State, Biomedical Engineering intent (College of Engineering), supposed to be the hardest to get in from that school. But I believe you have a pretty good shot carlinadj in getting in. Again it all depends on that gpa when you send in that mid-year transcript.

Apparently the GPA and SAT numbers for State applicants are much higher this year.

I think you have a pretty decent chance getting in, as long as this past semester went well for you… Can you take the ACT/SAT again at this point and send it in to be added to your application? I know you can send them “updates” about ECs and awards and stuff, but I don’t know about scores. If yes, then take the ACT asap. most people score higher on it, anyways. Good luck, though!

I’m surprised to hear about the deferral stuff. I was accepted in mid-December OOS as a biology major.

Yes, lizzie is right! Since you got deferred you can try taking the ACT! The ACT for me was SOOOOOO much easier than the SAT! When I last took my SAT, I had such a low score (1750~) and two months later I took the ACT for the first time. I didn’t do any studying for the ACT because I thought it was pretty similar to the SAT, and boy was I wrong. If you want to take the ACT, I advise you to be familiar with it first with some practice tests. But yeah, my first time taking it I got a 28, which is I think equivalent to a 1820. Not much of a difference, but there was improvement. So after taking the test I realized that the essay portion was last, which was good for me because I hate writing the essay out and having the thought of doing bad on it during the whole test. Also you can guess on this ACT unlike the SAT!! Who wouldn’t want that. SO yeah, after the first time taking it, I took 2 practice tests and became more familiar with how they grade it. And my second time taking it the next month, I received a 31, which is equivalent to a 2040 I think. overall, the ACT in my experience was MORE EASY!! I did find a few people who preferred the SAT, but not as much as the ones who prefer the ACT. I only took the ACT twice in my senior year…I regret not taking it beforehand during my earlier years of high schoo :(.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I’m still upset over my deferral, and I can’t believe I have to wait until the end of March for a decision. Needless to say, I’ve applied to 3 more schools and I’m expecting deferrals or denials from UNC and Wake Forest.

Just an update… I emailed the office of admissions at State and requested my intended majors be changed to Political Science or Criminology. Hopefully, I get good news on March 30th. Thanks for the support!
