Rank: 39 out of 377. GPA: 4.072
3 Ap classes this year/2 honors
I've been taking honors ever since freshman year
my grades are very unstable. freshman year bad, sophmore year straight As, junior year mainly As (like 2 Bs or something), this year...er. 5 As, 2 Bs, one C (don't shoot me! AP Chem is hard...)
SATs...here comes the horrible part...1640. Gasp! But I'm almost certain I've gone up because I retook it and the first time I was really tired.
So...yeah. You can tell me how funny it is that I'm even applying now.
Oh, and I'm African American, if that helps. And a girl.

fufu, you have a lot of positive points. Your SATs scores are as you are aware your Achilles heel, and it's hard to judge whether your strengths will compensate. How does that 1640 break down? Sometimes being lopsided is easier to explain than a low score across the board.

The best thing to do is to put the SATs out of your mind (you retook them, not much else you can do) and concentrate on your positives. Your rank is good. Is your GPA 4.072 weighted? Keep those senior year grades in the A range.

Get some help in organizing your EC's. You've got some real strengths but your list is all over the place. Pick two or three that mean the most to you and put together a resume that showcases progression and achievement.

Make sure your essays and recommendations are topnotch. Again, ask for help on your essay. Williams doesn't interview so much of what they know about your character comes from what your teachers say about you and how you present yourself. Think about what you can contribute to the campus community.

Music is a desireable EC at Williams and your multifaceted activities will be a plus. You should think about providing a performance tape and a separate music based package that highlights your accomplishments.

Yes, being African American will help, at Williams and at just about any college in America. The questions I would ask if I were Williams admissions committee would be "does this person really want to go to Williams?" "will she fit in?" "can she do the work?" You can't respond to these questions directly but you could make sure that your recommenders and essays provide answers indirectly.

Good luck and let us know how you do.
