MASTERWORK-An optional program for seniors in which they create a project of sorts by integrating a passion of theirs with academic interests. I plan to create a graphic novel, about approx 100 pages in length. It will be an integration of my interests in graphic novels/comic books and my academic interests in writing, philosophy, and art. I will perhaps address themes such as global warming in the novel. It's still being created, but I'm excited to present it at the end of the year ^_^

Ok, yeah, long list...Um, my GPA is pretty low, I know. I excel in history, english, language, and art, while math and science bring me down...I'm not sure what I plan to major in, but am interested in international relations, linguistics, philosophy, and psychology.

I will have excellent recs from english, spanish, and art teachers.

I will write my essay on "What do Pictures Want?" an essay prompt from UChicago's uncommon application. I will apply the same essay to my common application topic of choice essay prompt. I will write about pictures I took in Japan and my art work, providing a reference point for my essay and providing supplemental material for the colleges I apply too.

Could you please chance me at the following schools?

University of Chicago EA

Reed College EDII(I will only apply EDII if rejected or deferred from UChicago EA. Otherwise, I will apply RD)

Lewis and Clark College EA

Whitman College

Bard College

Skidmore College

Middlebury College

Thank you. :)

((And sorry again for the strangely unfinished post...I wish CC would let you edit threads.))

Also, a quick word on AP classes at my school:

My school offers about...6 AP courses. AP Literature, AP Spanish, AP French
AP Biology, AP US History, AP Calculus.

I don't particularly like AP Bio and AP Calc, and I would take AP US History, but it would have conflicted with my AP Spanish course, and I really like my spanish classes...

I think if my school had more interesting AP courses, such as AP Psych and the like (heh heh, rhyme!) I would take them. But as it is, AP offerings at my school are slim. Colleges would likely look at my transcript in relation to my what is available. Lastly, most graduates from my school who have gone on to top institutions (Princeton, Vassar, Colgate, Cornell, to name a few) have taken only 1-3 AP courses given the rigor of my school.

Last year, a 3.0 gpa student was accepted to Cornell! He was a pretty interesting guy though.

Anyway, my excessive response is done.

bump

please? I would really appreciate your input.

bump.

seriously, i get frustrated when tons of other topics get posted on but mine always seem to fall back...

please give me your input.

My topics tend to do the same thing - honestly unless you have perfect stats and people don't have to do anything other than admire them and tell you that you're in to any university you apply - you tend not to get many replies.

Well the problem for me, and some others on here is that some of the schools you listed are somewhat obscure. If you check other threads, unless they have a lot of other more recognizable schools with those, they usually get ignored. People here are used to talking about the Ivies, the top 25, and big universities. I was going to say that U of C was a reach, and L&C college was a match, but I didn't feel it was proper to do so without chancing the rest of your colleges.

i never get posted on either! I usually look for threads with few replies, but then again that's me! Ok, now about your stats. I am not familiar with any of those colleges so I'm not of much help.Sorry!

Peppers, you make such an excellent point. Everyone seems to be applying to the same schools right???

So isn't my list more fun and diverse then?! Haha!

Seriously though, the schools I'm applying to are not THAT obscure are they? And just because my GPA isn't at least a 3.8, that doesn't really mean I'm not going to get into anyplace, does it?

I'd appreciate your thoughts...

UChicago: Reject

I know little about the other schools.

I don't think you have much chance at Chicago, Reed, or Middlebury. These colleges are going to want to see a tougher curriculum, higher grades, and higher ACT.

Ooh, a graphic novel on global warming? That's pretty cool. So you like to draw comics?

I think you're an average, well rounded student. It's good that you began to take harder courses, and hopefully your grades improved, too.

If you stress your interest in the environment, I think you can get into Lewis and Clark (it's one of the colleges I'm looking into, too :D). Whitman I am a little more unsure about...rumors say that it's getting harder and harder to get into that college. I'm sure if I'll make it there, too :o

My advice is to definitely pump up that ACT score, and get good grades in the classes you plan on taking. Good luck!

Unless you write some extremely beast essays (really really top-notch creative), you're not getting U Chicago. You're in everywhere else. Your list is kind of odd seeing as there is a huge gap between U Chicago and everything else. Oh, and why would you apply ED to Reed? It's such an easy school, you're a shoo-in RD. Don't waste ED on them. Evidently, you're looking for the liberal artsy/smallish/humanity-focused type school. Consider some upper range liberal arts school for ED. Do more research into schools that would interest you AND offer a great education.

ProspectiveMD, Reed is no longer the easy admit school it once was. The admissions rate there last year was 33%, average GPA was 3.9, something like 67% of admits were in the top 10% of their class, mean SAT was 1384 and mean ACT 30. In short, Reed now is "an upper range liberal arts school." Someone with a 3.4 GPA is hardly a "shoe in" there during the RD round. If Reed is clearly Onli's top choice, then applying ED is probably his best shot.

Thanks for all your thoughts.

Any further?

bump bump bump

My guess, based on friends from last year who applied to most of these schools, and knowing their stats would be:

Chicago, Reed and Middlebury..all rejects
Whitman, Bard and Skidmore..matches
Lewis and Clark...safety

University of Chicago EA: Reject. GPA/ACT is much too low (and they emphasis academics highly in admission)

Reed College : unsure

Lewis and Clark College EA: match/low reach

Whitman College: unsure

Bard College: low reach

Skidmore College: unsure

Middlebury College: reach/low reach

Bump, thanks

I've decided not to apply to UChicago...Too much prestige for me, and the student body is a little bit too big for my liking. That said, I will now be shifting all my attention to my Reed EDII application...wish me luck with that.

Further thoughts?
