Chances Please!!

Hey everyone,

I am currently a junior at a competitive all girls independent school in Washington Dc. I would appreciate any feedback on my chances of acceptance to University of the South!

Junior- All girls private school
School does not rank or do formal GPA's but as of last semester my average was around a 82 or 83 (i know it seems low compared to the 4.0's and 3.7's that are commonly posted but the overall "average" but i think that it is hard to compare public school gpa's which are often weighted with estimated averages from certain private schools- just my opinion, please do not take offense)

I took the ACT in february with ZERO preparation and scored a 28 (reading -33, 28 math, 26 writing, and 25 science) i begin a tutoring program for the ACT and hope to raise my composite score to around 30-32.

My school does not offer many AP classes- they only offer around 5 total although i will still take the english AP exam this june.
my courseload including my courses for next year amount to
4 years of math - algebra II, geo/trig, algebra III and Trig, AP stats
4 years of english
4 years of upper school french- unimpressive grades- french is no strong point
Sciences:
Biology- 9th
Physics -10th
Chemistry - 11th
Forensics/Med Lab Technology- 11th
AP Biology or AP enviromental science -12th

4 years of History - I will be taking AP Government next year- my school does not offer AP selection for other years

Extracurriculars:
I studied ballet very seriously for over 10 years (6-7 times a week) as well as attended several highly selective summer intensive programs (3 out of 4 summers in highschool - i do not plan to attend this summer). I chose to cut back on ballet this fall in order to focus on my academics. I am still involved in ballet though not nearly as much as before.

I am competing in my state's Distinguished Scholar Program for Dance and i hope to have a good recommendation from a former dance teacher

Volunteering:
I spent a week last spring volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans
I tutor once a week for under privileged children

I am almost 100% positive that i want to go into journalism and/or broadcast journalism

I know that this is long but i wanted to fully explain my situation and please leave me your opinions on my chances

My D is a freshman at Sewanee. I can't comment on your chances, but I can comment on the process.

Visiting Sewanee (schedule it in advance) and talking to a real live person at Admissions in Fulford Hall might be your best bet to find out where you stand.

They won't tell you directly, but Sewanee's process is very personal, and if you can make an impression (and explain the items above), you have a better chance of standing out to the committee. They are a small community -- how small you can't appreciate until you go there.

I agree with texashoosier. My S was admitted and is waiting on a couple schools before deciding. He visited and spoke with people and was very impressed with everything. The Admissions people are extremely helpful and professional- they are a great resource and you could even try calling them or speaking with someone at a college fair. My son did all of that. The thing that most impresses me about Sewanee is the diversity of personalities, but all of them seem to love it. Good luck!

Taychase09, I'd recommend you just keep up your current academic progress and you'll probably have a good shot at getting in here. You said DC area... we've got plenty of girls from all the schools up there, especially Madeira, and I know there are some strong connections to Baltimore and DC areas now as word gets out through current students and young alumni.
