Try the ACT; some people do better on that if their SATs are low. Also, you may want to buy a few test prep books or take a class if yoou can afford it. Your GPA needs to be higher too. Your ECs are good, but I don't think that it will make up for the GPA and SATs. The good news is that you're a minority applicant, which will improve your chances. Right now, I'd say your chances are low, but if you can get your scores and GPA higher, you might have a shot.

yea if you had higher SATs or did well on the ACT you would have a great shot -- but you really need to get those standardized test scores up

DEFINTIELY get your standarized scores up. colleges will not take "i suck at standarized testing" as an excuse...
trying the ACT is a really good idea. i personally did much better on the ACTs - easier format

Dear FreshPrince322 : Time for a little straight-up honesty and a reality check.

Your two way SAT score is a 940/1600. The bottom 25th-percentile starts at 1240 with a 50th-percentile at approximately 1330/1600. A score below 1000 is just far, far outside of the acceptable range. You are about 200 points away from the bottom of BC's acceptance range.

Your GPA at 3.10 is also below the mark and you are likely not in the top 10% of your class of 220 which is the benchmark that BC uses in its acceptances.

Finally on the academic side, while you are showing initiative by taking two upcoming AP exams, you are competing against students who have taken eight, ten, or more exams at the highest level.

New Jersey is a well represented area from the Northeast at Boston College, so you do not score points for location diversity in your application. Your intended major of Marketing sounds like a CSOM application which will be slightly more competitive based on recent statistics (though not by much).

At this point, FreshPrince322, you would serve yourself well by reassessing your list of target schools based on where you are academically.

This year, BC's middle 50% SAT scores ranged from 1950-2220. You scored a 1450 on your SATS /2400...that's no where near the accepted range. Also, your GPA is far too low for BC, they typically want students to be in the top 10% of their class and I doubt your GPA would put you in the top 10%. Being a URM would not help you enough to gain you admission into Boston College. As of now, BC is an unrealistic reach. Try taking the ACT, if you get 31+ given your low GPA, I think you may have a shot.

Have you thought of BU's general studies program (if you're looking for a reputable school in Boston), or Manhattan College, Farfield, and Fordham (still somewhat of a reach) if you are looking for other Jesuit / Catholic schools. I think you would stand a fair shot of gaining admission at these schools.

Good luck.

The lowest accepted SAT I have ever seen was a 1540 / 2400. The applicant had some amazing triumphs (i.e. surviving the orphanage, moved to the U.S. when s/he was 14 and had to pick up the language). Even then the person needed serious remedial classes and extensive help his/her first year. Even if you are counting on the URMs factor, at best you can only have 100-200 points below the 25th percentile (yours is 500) baring surviving exceptional circumstances. Of course, you are not hopeless. Your chances would increase substantially if you can boost your standardized testing up to the 25th percentile. If you are planning to study in CSOM, focus on the math section (that counts the most). I wouldn't worry too much about your GPA (unless you are way out of the top 25%), get as much A's as possible, but it will be your standardized tests that will sink or float you. I hope that helps.

P.S. Don't take the ACT unless you can realistically expect to score more than 31 points. For some reason this year ACT score rises quite a lot, to 30(25th)-33 (75th) (last year was 28-32).

Reddune, what year are you? If you are 2010 or 2009 there is a good chance we may know each other.

class of 2009 DHRBC. Representing "Talon of Fury." LOL!
