Chances PLEASE!!!!!

I am a junior - Asian American (great, I know!)

However, unlike most of my peers I am NOT by any means a "math/science" person, though I do love math, I love english/humanities wayyyy more!

Here's a break down of my stats as of right now:

Rank: 3/ 550 people --> though this year, my classes along with ECs have been extremely difficult. So im hoping I can maintain that level even after exams, which are coming up so soon!

GPA: 4.7 (out of 4 due to weighting)
Class load: hardest possible no doubt!
ACT: score without much studying - 29 (however, I will make SURE this goes up by June. My goal is a 32+ and im quite confident that i can do it with proper prep. Im studying!)

ECs: (I think this is the stronger portion of my app...let me know ur opinions..)

Editor-in-chief of School Paper - first junior to become one in a looong time, i am absolutely certain that the newspaper advisor will write me a first class rec!

Question: Our school paper won a national award from columbia university (silver crown) during my time this year as EIC, is something I should mention? This award is not directed to me specfically but more to our entire paper. I think it's appealing as it is an award recogonizing the top few papers internationally...please share ur opinions on this (I dont want to sound desperate or anything when mentioning awards in my app by using ones that give me a bad impression, but do keep in mind, this award was recieved under my direction as EIC...so idk if that makes a difference or not!)

What do you think??

You have a great chance with very impressive stats. If anything, increase your standardized test score (as you plan on doing). You should definitely mention the award, that’s definitely impressive! The best thing you could possibly do is show them interest and let them know you’re seriously interested. If you’re a good student and they know you like them, your chances are very good.

Thanks! Yeah, I know my ACT scores are pretty weak…hopefully I can live up to my goal!

Try the SAT’s too. Often people do much better on one than the other. Then you can pick what you want to send.

haha hardworker i swear im not picking on you. but i got into both washu and michigan so im on both boards a lot. But the chance stuff honestly means NOTHING. I did terrible on the SAT’s but i really didnt care much at the time. I had a 680 and 710 on CR and math respectively and a 740 on the writing section. But i had a 3.8 unweighted and around 4.13 weighted GPA. But i had some stuff that made it clear that i should get in. Point being its a crap shoot. Dont worry about this stuff. Like to quote a UPenn statistic “50% of the students are qualified but we can only accept” 15% or something like that. Point being its ALL LUCK. How the admission officers are feeling that day, etc etc. So just try your best and you’ll do great. You’ll be happy wherever you go.

Though based on all you’re awards and such, i think itd be best to leave that outta the main part of you’re app and make a resume that just lists you’re awards. Like if you have so many great achievements but you should try and “highlight” an aspect of yourself. Like it seems like you’re an amazing writing, maybe you’re interested in writing in college? Try and highlight. Like when you look at your stats now, TO ME, and that means nothing remember that, it seems “stuffed.” I would HIGHLY recommended you do interviews at these schools because it tends to be (this may or may not apply to you) that people that stuff their apps lack a social life and are, i hate to say, it losers and tools. So doing an interview can show them that you are a real person and you can show off who you are. Like your stats say so much about you but its such a varied set of activities it MAY actually make it vague. Its again great that you do so many things and do them well. I would just recommend highlighting which things you like best to show that you do these things not just for academic and gain, you do them cuz you like it and such.

Again i am not trying to attack you or anything. I would recommend interviews to washu and mich if you are applying there. But based on you’re stats you shouldn’t have a problem getting in, you are very qualified. So that means its just down to luck now and all you can do is pray (if you’re religious lol). so don’t stress about it.

MediaBob - thanks so much! I appreciate your advice and yes, I do realize that admissions is often all luck.

It’s true that I am interested in writing, and I do plan on pursuing journalism to some extent (probably not as a major simply due to the lack of job security in the field) but I’e always been one to juggle a gazillion things at once because i sincerely do have several interests…some which relate to my culture (indian), some which relate to politics, and many that relate to writing. I thought I did show that I am not just doing these things for the heck of it, because most of my activities are at least somewhat in-depth. I agree that things like NHS and DECA were probably more for college admissions more than anything but like for MHS even, as an officer I made it a goal to improve it somehow by creating the website (which lol i guess is another thing im interested in…i guess I do see your point…)

Anyways, I sincerely do want to thank you for insight. It means a lot to me for someone to take a moment and give advice…it’s definitely something I will keep in mind as I am working on apps during the summer!
