Chances/Question

I'm an Indiana high school senior applying to IUB this year. I was wondering what my chances would be of getting accepted.

I'm going to be graduating with the Academic Honors Diploma.
GPA about a 3.6
ACT 25 (going to be retaking in Sept.)
AP Classes: Psych, Bio, Chem, Physics, Calc AB, Econ, Composition
Honors Classes: Microbio, Sociology
Extracurriculars: Cross Country (4 years), Speech (4 years), Spanish Club (4 years), Track (3 years), National Honors Society (2 years), working experience about 2 years, volunteering for 4 years

I want to send in my application as soon as possible because of the rolling admissions, but I want to be able to get as much academic scholarships as I possibly can. I'm going to have to retake the ACT in Sept. Should I send in my application as is and then send my other scores later, or should I wait until I retake the exam?

I think you should get in without a problem whether you apply before or after the next ACT.

Automatic academic scholarships is another issue entirely. The minimum GPA for the smallest scholarship is 3.7. Does 3.6 happen to be unweighted? Does your school include weighted on your transcript? If not, ask them to do so to maximize your scholarship chances. You also need at least a 26 for scholarships. It won’t hurt you to wait until after you retake the ACT to apply. Last year they did look at scores past the Nov 1 deadline for scholarship, but it might be worth waiting.

Spend some time with your counselor to see if it is possible to get a 3.7 or above reported on the counselor’s form. If not, your ACT score won’t even matter and you really don’t even need to retake the ACT if you are set on getting into and attending IU. As an in-state student, you will get into IU for certain with a 3.6 gpa/25 ACT.

The most you can get with a gpa between 3.7 to less than 3.8 is $2,000/year. But you can get $5,000 or $9,000 per year if you can report a gpa of 3.8 or above and have high enough SAT or ACT scores.

If you find out that your counselor can report 3.7 or 3.8, try also taking the SAT that will be offered on October 10. IU will accept this score for upgrading to an automatic scholarship and there will probably still be automatic scholarship money left when the score is reported to IU in early November.
