International student (Ontario, Canada)

Grades: ranging from 80 to 85% average through HS (which is an A here), and sitting at 85% so far in senior HS year

SATs:
1790/2400 = 1260/1600

Critical Reading: 670
Math: 590
Writing: 530

-Mandatory 40 hours of community service completed
-HS football (not at an elite level though)

Not really many extra-curricular opportunities here...

What are my chances to these schools and how would they classify:

Indiana (Kelley School of Business)
Virginia Tech
Penn St. - University Park
Texas Christian
Florida St.
Kansas
Arizona

Any recommendations of other schools would be great too. Thanks.

bump...

any help please guys?

When the schools recalculate your GPA, 80-85 is a B.

That's kind of unfair... wouldn't they realize that I deserved an A based on my curriculum? Canada's curriculum is no easier than USA's.

we beg to differ =P

just kidding

You will get into Arizona for sure.

That is using US standards, an 80-85 is a B in the US.

My understanding is that a 80 to 85% in Canada is the equivalent of a 3.6 GPA here. Based upon that, here are your chances at the schools you asked about.

Indiana (Kelley School of Business)--Match
Virginia Tech--Match to Slight Reach
Penn St. - University Park--Slight Reach
Texas Christian--Match
Florida St.--Slight Reach
Kansas--Match
Arizona--Safe Match

The toughest of these to get into will be Florida State, then Penn State. Arizona will be the easiest, then Kansas and Indiana (and direct admision to the business school should be possible based upon the Canadian GPA equivalency).

Another school to consider is Illinois (UIUC). Your SATs are just a little bit low, but your GPA is right at their average. If you are considering accounting for a major, it's a great school.

Thanks Calcruzer, I didn't know U of A was so easy to get into, nor FSU was as difficult. Your idea of UIUC is a nice one, although I think my chances are slim. Anybody else with chances/recs?

to give you an idea of the ONTARIO GPA breakdown or Toronto GPA breakdown. some schools have their own system when they have IB, AP and other special programs

but if you went to a generic high school, you are looking at the following scale:

100=5.0=A+
.
.
90=4.5=A+
.
.
80=4.0=A-
NOTE: 80-84 is A-
70=3.0
60=2.0
50=1.0
less than 50=FAIL
while you may have 83-86%, that's 4.0+, but our GPA is on a 5.0 scale

And it's almost impossible to get over 95% unless you are either
A: a genius/a very hardworking student
B: your school had grade inflation
