Chances to Applying to a Good College

Hi,
I just wanted to know what my chances are for getting into a good college like Rice, UChicago or any other Ivy League schools were.

I am a Junior and have a GPA of around 4.3.

I have taken the maximum of AP classes every year and right now all my classes are AP or simply advanced (still give me 5.0 as if it were an advanced class).

I am also in the IB program so I get extra college credit.

I can get really good recommendations from figures that represent national organizations.

I have a lot of volunteer hours, although they are only necessary for the IB program.

I am in many extracurriculars like Varsity Debate, Academic Decathlon, National Beta Club, Italian National Honor Society, National Honor Society, Chess, and I was in my school's Tennis Club.

I am a member of LULAC and I hold a high position in it. I am also a member of my city's Mayor Youth Council.

I don't know if ethnicity really matters since Affirmative Action is still debated, but I am Hispanic.

Some colleges want to see your Middle School grades like UChicago, and mine are perfect with all A's.

I taken part of the Bickel & Brewer International Public Forum Competition my Senior year and probably do very well in it as my school always does.

I will go to the LULAC Washington Youth Leadership Seminar the beginning of my Senior year where I will talk about politics and current issues in our nation with members of congress. We will present a bill as a group since each person represents a certain state, and will probably get to meet President Obama in person.

I might be able to get the Presidential Award for Community Service for all the hours I've done.

I am also an intern at LULAC where I help those that need assistance with their Differed Action applications.

This is not all of it and it's a little general, but hopefully I can get a professional and honest review.
Thank you everyone!

What is your SAT score?

The selectivity cutoff when scores+GPA+non-spectacular EC will still reliably get you in is around Cornell/UChicago.

Anything above will almost always be a reach barring hooks or very strong ECs.

My SAT score is above 2200, thanks for reminding me. Please can anybody else comment?

Also correction, I will take part of the Bickel & Brewer competition my senior year

Your weighted GPA could be a little higher, but it isn’t so bad. I would say that you have a fair chance at Rice. The Ivy League and UChicago are more of a reach for you, as they are for every applicant. What are your safeties? Have you considered strong public schools like UVA, UNC-CH, and UCLA?

I don’t know, I have taken all of the hardest classes could ever take, and I am sure volunteering really does have an impact. That’s why I posted all these EC and volunteering jobs I had. I try to do something other people haven’t really done before.

Wait sorry, I having a hard time understanding what you said BuBBLES lol sorry

I know of no schools that wants middle school grades unless you took high school level classes while in middle school.

Assuming you have around a 3.8 unweighted GPA then a 2200 makes you competitive at Chicago, Rice and some of the Ivies. Given their low admittance rate however, you need to expand your list.

Strong publics like Virginia, Michigan, North Carolina, Berkeley and UCLA would certainly be in the match range. However, please remember that, generally speaking, out of state applicants to state flagships tend to get the short end of the financial aid stick. You are attractive to these schools because of your academic profile but they won’t feel overly compelled to offer scholarships to offset costs.

On this board Alabama seems to be very generous with merit aid and if you’re a National Merit Semi-Finalist or Finalist then USC (Southern Cal) can offer substantial merit aid.

Even though your weighted GPA might be on the lower side, your course load of APs and a full diploma program (from what I assume) will gain you a lot of plus points. SAT score looks great too - over 50th for all your schools.

Rice - Match
Spectacular essays for Brown and Uchicago will get you on a good spot (the essays should be different like - those two schools love that)
Cornell will be a high match.

Penn, Dartmouth would be low reaches.

Columbia would be slightly higher a reach.

Princeton, Yale and Harvard would be real reaches

Don’t sweat it though, you have done really well - Ivies are just reaches for everyone.

Try other matches like tufts, CMU, JHU, Northwestern, Umich etc.
Furthermore, add some safeties to that list.

Goodluckk!
