Chances to get into the University of Minnesota Twin Cities CSE or CBS

@CEOSandeep also this one. Sounds like they pull from the strongest candidates. There is hope for you yet!!!

@Mamelot Thank you so much. I actually just called them and they said that this was their most competitive year yet and since I put CSE as my first preference, they only tried their hardest to get me into that. I told them that I’m open to being admitted into the CLA also but all they said was wait for a decision by April, 15th.
They didn’t give me any firm answer at all. But I think since my stats for CSE was below their averages, they didn’t admit me. It’s just strange how many of my friends who put CSE as their first choice and CLA as their second got into at least CLA even though they applied after me with much lower stats. Two of my friends got into CLA with a 26 and a 28 with a 3.3/4 unweighted GPA.
The admission counselor also asked me if I wanted to change my first preference to CLA but I said I would get back to her later on that. That would give me a higher chance I presume but CSE will still always be my first choice.
If I can’t get into Minnesota, I would just need to go into Purdue University but the tuition is over 10k higher per year there. Wow, this is such a big dilemma!

@CEOSandeep Your 31 ACT seems reasonable for CSE. With your GPA of 3.776/4.0 UW, what was your class rank? Where are you from and is your school highly competitive? Did you take many honors/AP classes?

I do not think your ACT is keeping you out of CSE but maybe one of the other factors above is.

ACT Composite for 2015 was 30 - 33 (25/75). You are right there in the range.

@CyclonesGrad My rank is in the top 20% as I go to a very competitive school. I’m an OOS from Texas and I’ve taken many APs and Pre-AP classes (15+).

@CEOSandeep The class rank may be hurting you to get into CSE. What is a Pre-AP class?

@CEOSandeep What was your class rank? I can’t believe that they waitlisted you for both especially liberal arts. Class rank is the only thing I can still think of that might have effected your chances negatively, because everything else looks good.

@CEOSandeep Forget about my previous comment. I didn’t see someone already asked that. Yeah, that seems to be a problem, but not nearly enough to be waitlisted for liberal arts. Must be a competitive year, huh?

@universityGeek - yes in some sense. I get the sense that they were paying particular attention to what the applicants specified for their colleges of interest. This is wise - it impacts eventual yield by admitting students who they think will enroll. Not saying this applies to @CEOSandeep because he/she did try to change to CLA at some point. However, if your stats/class rank are less competitive for CSE and you don’t specify CLA as a backup when you apply, you could be signalling that you don’t want to consider any option other than CSE. They may still put you in CLA but it’s probably a less likely scenario than if you HAD specified CLA.

@CyclonesGrad In Texas we call honors classes, Pre-Ap. It weird, I know.
@UniversityGeek Yeah, my rank could be a factor. I think I did better my senior year. I sent in my new transcript over to Minnesota. Hopefully, my rank improved a bit and they’ll see it.
@Mamelot I think the only option I have right now if I really want to get in is to change by first choice major to CLA Computer Science, however, that will almost completely prevent me from getting into CSE Computer Science, which I prefer a tiny bit more. I really hope they would consider me for both instead, but as I have seen, I think they would rather keep me on the waitlist for eternity than admit me to CSE, despite my second choice.

Uh… when is the earliest we find out again?

If you don’t mind me asking…
Did you end up getting accepted?
